Saturday 6-22-96 -
Kerry
We are landing at Shannon airport and immediately drive down south
through a National Park with beautiful
rhododendron groves.
We
are driving through parts of the countys Limerick and Kerry down to Killarny
and Kenmare, then further to Glengariff, in order to start out our way along
the coast line at the "Ring of
Kerry".
Sunday, 6-23-96
Driving to Kenmar along the coast towards
the really narrow winding road, the so-called "Ring of Kerry".
Stop on Dursey Island and continuation of our
journey to Cahirciveen, where we stay for 2 nights. On the way we stop to see
some castles, where we feel like transferred back
into medieval times as we explore the inside of the
ruins.

On a
trip to Valentia Island we find hidden paths to a lighthouse placed in a bay
surrounded by slate. We walk further up and discover a grotto and of course we have
to go inside to investigate it. We find a little waterfall as well as a Madonna
icon
in there. Way up there we have a breathtaking view of green hills and the
ocean. After enjoying that, we drive along the coast to Ballinskelligs and
Glenbeigh....and guess what we find there?.....a white sandy beach of many
miles surrounded by grassy sand dunes. We romp about like kids, hiding in the dunes, lying in the sun.
It is totally windy and we need our windbreakers, but as soon as we lay down in
the dunes the wind is gone and the sun beats down on
us.

Today
it's pouring rain, so we decide to use the day for driving up north. We're
heading out towards Dingle Bay to stop at Europe's most western point, called
Slea Head. From there we drive through dense fog and without any sight over the
Conor Pass to Tralee and Listowel. Too bad, cause I think we could've had
beautiful views from up there. Our way leads us towards Tarbert, where we
take a ferry to Killimer. Meanwhile the bad weather
calmed down a bit, it's still raining, but at least the sight is better. We can
see lots of dolphins in the ocean.
Once we enter the land again we keep
on driving to Kilrush and then to Kilkee, where we spend the night. For dinner
we go to O'Brians to enjoy really good food and Irish folk music. Afterwards we
go for a little walk on the beach.

Today
we wanna see the famous Cliffs of Moher, so we get up
early. On the way to Moher we stop on a horse stable and go for a horseback
ride for about an hour. As we later approach the Cliffs the view takes our
breaths away. We can just see the plateau, not even the real cliffs and it
looks amazing. The Cliffs of Moher stretch out about 8 kilometers and as we
walk closer we can see that they vertically slope down to the raging ocean for
about 200 meters - simply enormous, gigantic.
Of course we walked from one end to the other and
therefore we needed all day, but it was totally worth it. The weather had
cleared up, the sun was shining and after that long walk our leg muslces were
sore. The views on the Cliffs are really undescribably beautiful. We enjoyed it
and took many pictures (see the gallery). In the evening we're driving
further up north towards the Burren area and till Ballyvaughan where we find a
nice room in a farmhouse called "The Rocky View" to spend the
night.
Thursday,
6-27-96
After
a substantial breakfast we decide to walk around and see where we are. In front
of us we can see a mountain called "Black Head", the rest of the landscape
looks like it's decorated with sheep, cows and
horses on this fresh early morning. We view a creek and sand dunes behind the
other side of the house and take a walk there to have a little 2 hour nap in
the dunes.........oh how relaxing. Refreshened we drive down south towards
the Aillwee Caves, where we explore an old baer cave. Later, on our drive
through the Burren area we stop here and there to visit some medieval castles.
We are absolutely amazed of the
interior of these castles. At night we are experiencing a quite violent storm
and snuggle deep in our beds.
Friday, 6-28-96
Today
the weather is generally fine, though partly cloudy. Sun and rain take turns.
We start driving towards Shannon and visit several mansions and castles till we
finnally find the big Bunratty-Castle. This is a huge
medieval castle within a nicely landscaped park, which contains original Irish
houses. We spend the whole day there and find a room to
stay for the night nearby. The evening we spend near Bunratty in a Pub, where
we enjoy another great Irish meal.
Saturday,

Unfortunately our Irish week is over and after breakfast we head
out to the Shannon airport to drop off our rental car and take the plane to Germany. We
will never forget the Irish!!!!!!!!
