In early 1925, Earl Gaskill, an employee of MINER GROCERY CO., created this unique all olive window display.
Here is an enlarged view showing that there really were olives in all those jars.
Gaskill had Mr. Arnold, a local photographer, snap a picture of the display. He then forwarded the illustration to the U.S. distributor for the OLD MONK OLIVE OIL COMPANY of Nice, France. In return he received a letter from an executive of the distributor which stated that, ".....my attention has been called to your special Olive Window, and appreciating the detail and the amount of work that you went to in preparing same, I feel that we should reciprocate. Therefore, I trust that you will kindly acccept the enclosed check, which, in a way, may compensate you for the excellent work done...."
Miner's store was located on the west side of Old Woodward, a little south of Maple. Next door was Bill Olsen's Meat Market. An archway was cut in the partition separating the two stores so that customers could buy their meat on one side and their groceries on the other. Miner later moved to Bloomfield Hills. Earl Gaskill went on to manage the Grocery Department at SFIRE'S MARKET on West Maple. In later years, before his retirement, he was employed by THE SPORTSMAN, across Martin St. from the Municipal Building.
Shown above is Adams School in the late 1920's, while it was being greatly enlarged from its original size. If you look closely at the roof line you will note that the cap for the added east wall has not been installed and the greenhouse on the lower level has not yet even been added. The original building was the full width of this photo, but it only extended north to the point where the cap on the east wall is missing. Many rooms as well as the full sized gym/auditorium were added at this time.
