Today yahoo released a beta version of Yahoo! Go 2.0 software for Windows Mobile 5.0/6.0. This release is yet another attempt from yahoo to compete in the mobile arena with likes of google and windows live search.
Here are some first impressions:
- Very quick to download and install. The install file is only 700 kb. It was up and running in less than 2 mins.
- Stunning graphics and colors. Typical yahoo.
- Breadth of information available write in your palm.
- I was surprised that it could actually open word attachments (many more are supported) right within the Y Go interface.
- Flickr uploader is nice. It has built in settings to define privacy, tags, title and description.
- Weather widget is nice and fast.
- Stock market widget is very handy too.
- Maps widget is BAD. It is very slow and clumsily built. It actually crashes the whole application. I don't know how did they even release in "beta". It is not even pre-alpha. Better stick with Google Maps for maps on mobile. GMaps for mobile is fast, easy and fun to use.
- Mail widget is good too. Preview displays last 3 emails in inbox. Click on the mail icon and you go right into mailbox. However, other folders are burried under. Here is how you go to it: open inbox -> Options -> Folders. Most surprising feature !!! Push e-mail.
- It can also sync your yahoo address book with your phone address book.
- News section is also very comprehensive. The feature I liked the most is, its ability to import rss feeds from my yahoo pages.
Overall, it is a decent application but little unstable. Since, it is a beta release AND from Yahoo! - that wasn't surprising. Another missing piece was "yahoo messenger". How can you not include yahoo messenger? Bring it soon.
Quick tip: It is wise to restart your device after installing Yahoo! Go 2.0 once. It is a windows thing.
