MARK BOWDEN

Mark Robert Bowden (II) was born in 1951 and is an accomplished American writer.  He has been a staff writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer since 1979.  He has won many awards, and has received major international recognition for his book Black Hawk Down.  (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

When Bowden started his research for what has come to be known as The Battle of The Black Sea, in Somali, he found that there had not been a reconstruction, investigation or assessment of the events that happened that day by the government.  Due to Bowden’s hard work, Black Hawk Down stands as the best account we have of what truly happened that day.  In fact, it is used as the basis for study in American military schools and military training and is part of their mandatory reading curriculum.  (BrothersJudd,Com.)

Although Mark Bowden makes it quite clear he is only a journalist with no background or experience in combat, because of the accuracy of his book, he has been asked to address the Military Operations Research Society, the U.S. Military Academy (West Point) the U.S. army Command and General Staff College (Ft. Leavenworth) and the Central Intelligence Agency. (Blogcritics.org.)

So how did this Journalist write something that gave him so much respect among the military professionals?  He went to the place it all happened, he went to Somali.  When planning his trip, he asked the State Office for some advice.  They told him the best advice they could give him was not to go at all.  Also he tells the soldiers tales and he tells them straight.  He gives a needed first hand account of the Americans and Somalis, as well as a blow-by-blow of the most intense combat the Americans have faced since the Vietnam War.  (Blogcritics.org.)

Bowden manages to tell a genuinely thrilling story and illustrate points about what American’s unparalleled fighting forces can and can’t do.   As Bowden interviewed the men for the book, he was struck by how little bitterness there was among the men who went through the whole ordeal.  They were angrier at the decision to call off the mission the day after the battle than anything that happened during it.

As well as Black Hawk Down, Mark Bowden is also known for his books: Killing Pablo, Road Work, Bringing The Heart, Our Finest Day, Doctor Dealer, Finders Keepers, Thunder Run and Pitt Rivers.
