Dear P Wiwanda,
I have never seen the
clear plastic package before, and I agree with you that the foam
package is the best for protection. All wine shops, auction houses, (and
surprisingly individual sellers) I deal with are very professional when
come to shipping. Almost everyone use foam packages saving a few that
use cardboard wine shipper package, which serve the purpose but not
as good as the foam packages. Many sellers also include packaging cost
in the shipping cost.
I recently made 2 orders: 1) Shipping 5 bottles within California so I go for UPS ground for $11. 2) Shipping 4 bottles from CA to IL and I use UPS 2nd days air. That's $27. Ouchhhhhhh!
My
recommendation is that ground shipment is prefered whenever you are not
shipping accross the US. Since it only take 3 days from CA to IL, or IL
to NY, 1 day difference doesn't really worth extra cost.
Again,
don't ship in the summer months. The best time to ship wine is fall or
early spring when temperature is 10-15C, cellar temperature. When my
wine are delivered in NY, the bottles are cool but not refrigerated
during these months. And wine, when pack properly, is more resistant to
shipping than most people think. Vibration is never an issue for such a
short transit. Imported wine are vibrated all the way from Europe and
Australia anyhow and that doesn't destroy the wine. But if you buy old
wine, which are more fragile, you might want to go air shipment.
