BACK HOME The area was situated alongside the Draper railway station and water and electricity was available. This area was recommended for the camp "as a place to enable miners to obtain a healthy holiday by the seaside". By December 1948 full fire protection and a first aid post had been provided. That year three full trains carrying 1500 ZC/NBHC personnel and their families journeyed to Adelaide with a large proportion holidaying at the camp. Many Broken Hillites have happy memories of carefree seaside holidays at Tent City, Fort Largs. By 1979 the numbers of Christmas campers had dropped to between 300 and 400. In 1982 the company, due to declining income, was seeking to cut costs in non-operational areas. The Picnic Committee was consulted to consider an arrangement for that body to take full responsibility for the camp operations, but this was beyond that body's means. The property was sold to the South Australian Housing Trust during 1982, the settlement of sale being effected on October 6, 1982. AN ERA HAS ENDED. |
