The SHADOWS of KNIGHT
The Shadows of Knight formed in 1965 by a group of delinquent Chicago teens with snot & punk rock attitude to spare.
They are best known for their version of "Gloria", although their true greatness lies in their punk/blues hybrid, captured for posterity on the legendary '66 LP "Raw'N'Alive at the Cellar".
Lead guitarist Joe Kelley's out-of-control wailing and lead screamer Jim Sohn's snotty snarl combined to create what must have seemed like America's best defense against The Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds.
The Shadows of Knight tear through a set of originals and covers of Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Willie Dixon, Chuck Berry and Wilson Pickett...sound familiar?
Well, if your frame of reference involves British "blues rock", I would have to answer "NO".
The Shadows of Knight were close to the source, and their music is devoid of the posturing and theatrics typical of British bands.
Punk Rock, man, straight from 1966!
