The prefrontal cortex brain region plays a central role in self-discipline, in gratification postponement, in putting a rein on ones impulses….It keeps the angry thought from being allowed to become the hurtful word, the violent fantasy from becoming the unspeakable act. [BDL: I say this is a higher level of consciousness than the amygdala’s automatic survival instinct, which we use to master the amygdala.]

Not surprisingly, other species don’t have a whole lot of prefrontal function. Nor do young kids; the prefrontal cortex is basically the last part of the brain to fully mature, not coming completely on line for decades. [Our early 20’s.]

ð     [4] HANDOUT 4 13I-1 - LECTURE BY MICROBIOLOGIST DR. BRUCE LIPTON

 

I attended an interesting lecture by microbiologist Dr. Bruce Lipton.  He has found in his work that each cell is surrounded with receptors and that each of us is in communication with each of our cells.  In the outer membrane are our self receptors and identity. Beliefs and perceptions impact the cell. With multiple personalities the hair, and eye colors, allergies, eye sight, etc. changes with each personality change. Fear shuts off the growth system. Stress suppresses the immune system.  He sees humanity as a community of cells and each of us are connected to that community through our environment and beliefs. We are creators of our lives and outcomes through our beliefs and perceptions impacting the very cells in our bodies.

 

In 1985 he made a discovery that changed his life.  In his work on studying muscular dystrophy, cells of a person who had passed on were entered into a living person.  He found that the donor cells were responding to the person that had passed on and not to the living person.  He feels that this verifies that we are spiritual beings and immortal, living on after leaving this planet.

¨      OUR FEAR CAN LOCK OUT OUR GROWING TO MORE NEARLY EXPRESS OUR POTENTIAL.

·        NEED TO CHANGE FROM "HAVE TO" TO "WANT TO". Clean up room example.

 

·        In order to grow we need to be motivated to change as was pointed out a "WANT TO" condition.

 

·        DENNIS WAITLEY: TO CHANGE, our level of "EXPECTANCY" must CHANGE. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM LIFE? ONE NEEDS TO EXPECT SOMETHING DIFFERENT!!       CAN YOU HANDLE LIFE??   Your expectations impact what you get.   Serendipity is rare!

·        We need to move out before we have an assurance we will succeed. "WE NEED TO GET OFF THE PAD BEFORE OUR GUIDANCE SYSTEM CAN WORK". (SEE AFFIRMATION ON "MOVING OUT"). Risk taking need not be life threatening.

 

·        RECOGNIZE: We all have natural limitations. We all have misperceptions.

 

·        NATURAL LIMITATIONS:  Limits on the 5 senses: i.e. seeing, hearing, smelling. Just because we can't sense it doesn't mean it isn't there. We use telescopes, microscopes, listening devices to improve  our senses. Do you know that there is a night scope used in the military that can detect a person in absolute darkness? The body put off about 3 watts of energy and the scope can pick that up. Even though it is too dark for the eye to see, the scope picks up that a person is there.

WHAT I LEARNED FROM LOU TICE: WE HAVE A NATURAL FILTERING SYSTEM!!

 

·        There are millions of impulses going to your brain asking for attention! i.e. Every hair!

 

·        You are filtering out how your clothes feel, do your feet hurt, notice your rings!!! If we are constantly aware of all of these things then we could not function.}

 

·        We have what is called the RETICULAR ACTIVATING SYSTEM. A group of cells in the brain which monitors sensory messages to the brain. (Lou Tice")

     + It allows only "personally profitable information" and threats to get through to us.

     + Only PAY VALUE AND THREATS GET THROUGH. (What I see as personally of value to me.)

 

     LOU TICE EXAMPLE:

-- Example The Football Quarter back:

*   He’s aware of the 300# tackle about to crush him.(The threat). 

Ø   He’s aware of the wide end target in the end zone.(The pay value.)

Ø   He doesn’t hear the crowd (they are irrelevant) until after the touchdown.

 

 

-- Why did you hear your name clear across the room?  Your reticular activating system asks the    question: Are they a threat? Or are they paying me a compliment?

 

     + There is another factor ACCOUNTABILITY.

-- The mother with young child.  When the baby cries in the middle of the night who gets up to tend the baby? Mom.  Why didn’t Dad get up?  The one who feel accountable gets up.

 

     + Who watches the traffic in an automobile, the driver or the passenger? Who looks for the parking place?

 

{Does this explain why you can't get your children to shut the front door until they have to pay the heating bill? Daughter’s 1st apartment.}

¨      The RETICULAR ACTIVATING SYSTEM is a valuable tool that I can use to open my awareness of the whole world around me. Understanding this concept is essential to attaining goals.

 

     + BUT FIRST I must know what I want! ESTABLISH THE PAY VALUE!! = Something you

         really want! (That’s what a goal is! The very thought of it gets you excited!!)

 

     + Then I can become aware of "how to get it".

     + I then allow my reticular activating system to automatically let in information and data that is valuable to my goal. I then increase my awareness of valuable opportunities and information by making certain I know first Exactly what I want.

 

¨      IT IS IMPORTANT TO KEEP MY EYE ON THE PRIZE, THE PAY VALUE. That keeps you motivated.  Keep your eye on the donut not the hole!!

NOTE: IF THREATS ALWAYS GET OUR ATTENTION, DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHY NEWSPAPERS ALWAYS EMPHASIZE "BAD NEWS”? PULITZER IN THE 1920'S STARTED PUTTING A "CRISIS ISSUE" ON THE FRONT PAGE INSTEAD OF NEWS AND HE TOOK OVER THE NEWSPAPER SALES. ANY WONDER EVERY NEWSPAPER FOLLOWED??

·        "Once we LOCK-ON to and opinion, belief, attitude or "TRUTH" we find it very difficult to see or understand a new "TRUTH". When we LOCK-ON to the "TRUTH" we build a blind spot or SCATOMA to new information. It’s important that we periodically re-examine our beliefs.

 

·        We say: “Seeing is believing.”  What is more true is: “Believing is seeing”. Darwin on his travels to remote islands in his studies found that the islanders could not see the large ship he and his fellows came to the island only the small boat that brought them ashore.

 

  • Why was this so ? Because of how the eye and brain functions. This description was given on a program on the Public Television station Channel 6.

Now if most people believe something there is probably some likelihood it is true. BUT NOT ALWAYS!!

 

For instance Nicholas Copernicus wrote a book in 1543 called "Concerning the Revolution of the Celestial Spheres". What he said went against all learning of the times. So much so that the book was on the index of banned reading for 200 years. Copernicus had the audacity of saying and demonstrating that the sun did not rotate about the earth but that the earth rotated about the sun.

 

Some 90 years later in 1632 Galileo published a book, Dialogue On The Principal Systems Of The World, which  supported Copernicus. Well everyone knew this was not true. Man was the center of all things and this was important to his self image. Galileo under threat of being excommunicated had to publicly recant (but under his breath said "It's true"). Leaders of European thought were suspicious of anyone who dared speak against popular beliefs based on the teachings of ancient wise men. It would undermine their authority and the people would believe nothing they said.

 

JUST BECAUSE IT IS A POPULAR BELIEF DOESN'T MEAN IT IS TRUE.

I believe that the integration of the left and right brain and the practice of the Relaxation Response lead to a higher level of consciousness. Some believe it will change the world.

 

¨      THE RELAXATION RESPONSE REFERENCE BOOK BY HERBERT BENSON, MD, AVON, (Huge Bibliography) 12/96 Dr. Herbert Benson, Harvard Med., on CH3 Today show: relaxation, beliefs impact health. Per AMA: Spirituality impacts health; mind/body techniques also. They work & very cost effective.

     - Learning the relaxation response can be very helpful to those who wish to change.

 

·        POSITION OF OPENNESS

-         Very helpful in overcoming stress.

-          

THE RELAXATION RESPONSE

¨      Works like this:

§         Find a quiet place where you will not be interrupted.

§         Sit in a relaxed way. In a chair, feet on the floor, legs and arms uncrossed. Some like the Lotus Position. Whatever is relaxing but don't lie down, you'll probably fall asleep.

§         Close your eyes and picture yourself on the beach or in a beautiful meadow, which ever is the most restful and peaceful to you. Just find a peaceful place.

§         Breath in slowly through the nose, hold it for a few seconds, then let it release slowly through the mouth.

§         Let all the tension in your body flow out, through your toes and your fingertips, with each breath.

§         Then say: “At the core of my being there is an essence that is magnificent. At the core of my being I am at peace. It is the quiet place.   I am in the quiet place.”

       Then repeat over and over: "I am, I am still"......."I am, I am still"........”I am, I am still”........

§         If a thought comes to mind, look at it and let it go.

§         Do for twenty minutes first thing in the morning and again in the afternoon or evening.

§         At the end of the twenty minutes (no alarm clock), count to five and open your eyes slowly saying "coming to the here and now" and look around. Take another 5 minutes before going on with your day. If you do not take this time you will feel rough, like you didn't get enough sleep.

 

·        GAIN ENERGY:

     + The experience will be very restful, a way to gain energy.

 

·        NORMALIZE YOUR SYSTEM: (Improves health - Dr. Art Ulene; Reduces headaches - Today.)

 

     + It also lets your whole system normalize and relieve tension. You will end up more alert and more open to new ideas.

 

·        INSIGHTS:

            + Will get great insights. A link to the knowledge in your sub conscious.(Keep a pad and pencil            near by, write the insights down, they'll be gone shortly.

 

            If things come up that you can’t handle, then stop doing.  Talk to your counselor or therapist about it.

 

       - REMEMBER EVERY EXPERIENCE IN YOUR LIFE AT ONE TIME WAS RECORDED IN YOUR SUB-CONSCIOUS. (ALL OF THE 5 SENSES AT THE TIME PLUS YOUR FEELINGS, THE IMPRESSION OF THE OTHERS' FEELINGS, AND YOUR INTERPRETATION OF WHAT WAS HAPPENING.  THOSE OF LASTING IMPRESSION ARE STILL THERE !

 

            @ THEN THERE IS WHAT IS REALLY HAPPENING OF WHICH YOU HAVE AN             APPROXIMATION A PERCEPTION.

            @ YOU CAN INTEGRATE ALL OF THAT EXPERIENCE IN THE LIGHT OF MORE       RECENT KNOWLEDGE YOU HAVE GAINED AND RE INTERPRET ITS MEANING.

 

R     FROM YOUR RELAXATION RESPONSE SESSIONS YOU WILL LEARN WHAT IS YOUR NEXT  STEP IN YOUR DEVELOPMENT !!!

If we are to come from our authentic self it is important to understand how our human past has imprinted us and our genetic make up.

 

ð     [12] HAND OUT, 12:   “SYNOPSIS”: WHAT IS THE SOURCE OF OUR HERITAGE

 

For over 90% of our experience up to about 10,000 years ago we humans were a part of a collective, a nomadic tribe, hunting and gathering without a perception of ourselves as individuals.

 

We were into survival, scratching for food and water, enduring extreme heat and cold, fighting off disease and all the other creatures that would have us for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

 

We had our offspring right after puberty (12 to 16 years of age) so that we could nurture them into maturity before we died at the age of 25 to 30 years of age.

 

All of that is still a part of our nature and what comes naturally.

Today we live in cities, still fighting off disease, but mostly those that com with old age, not having to fight off other creatures except our fellow human beings. We have our offspring at an average age of 27 and live into our 90’s. We are being pounded with new thoughts and ideas at such faster and faster rate that no one person can keep up.

 

In our present environment none of this is natural, we are out of our element, and will be until we mature enough to change our subconscious mind set.

 

We have the power to change this mind set but only if we find the inclination to do so and make the commitment of our free choice.

 

We have more free time than ever before in our history. How we use that free time will determine our future.

§         Fogel says: Today time available for leisure exceeds time spent working.

 

            This raises “new and urgent set of general population issues” involving “fair access to spiritual             resources”. These include “a sense of purpose, a sense of opportunity, a sense of community, a             strong family ethics, a strong work ethic and high self-esteem”.

           

§         If the conquest of economic necessity means more time for reflection and introspection, education may be a spiritual as well as economic good.

 

§         Fogel says everyone having access to education “may have been the largest socialist enterprise in history: the transfer from the rich to the poor and middle classes of a form of capital that exceeds the value of all  privately held land and industrial capital, human capital”.

 

§         Fogel: If Americans increasingly have time - inclination for “self-realization” through reflection, this is grand news, but does not entail new government duties. [It is my (BDL) observation that actually we as a culture have moved more to entertainment to take up our time than “self-realization”.]

[BDL: 1946 End of W.W.II - Move to 2 parent family, loss of extended family. City job, industries. Less and less tradition. More marriage break ups.]

 

[BDL: 1997 Hampton, VA Community again comes to aid of family. Gives support, takes more responsibility. Teaching parents, gives help in raising child. Gives child what s/he needs. 1998 Proposition 10 passed to provide Children & Family Commission in each County of California to do the same

 

[BDL: What all of this means, when we look at all of the past human history and how we developed,  from this time forth the changes in human development will be the result of the use of our minds to make changes in our collective subconscious.  It is time for us to move from being ruled by the “amygdala” survival instincts, the fight or flight response, to being governed by our higher mind. And this can only be done by the development of each individual mind which impacts the collective mind of humanity.]
