The evening was chilly and wet as Mackenzie Reynolds walked along the foggy cliffs of her village in England. Her grandmother's mansion stood hidden in the background by the fog, but its presence was comforting. So much was changing around her and her life seemed to be spinning out of control! As she stared out at the sea she thought of the position she was in. Her fiance Raul Gurrirez, had been called off to war several days ago and he was leaving tomorrow. He had pledged his love to her and she accepted it because she loved him. But what if he never returned? She couldn't even bare the thought of living her life without him! But she knew she must be strong, he must not see her in such pain. She wanted him to return safely and not worry about her while he was out in the field at battle. Suddenly she heard her name being called through the fog and turned to see where it was coming from. She recognized the voice, it was her father's and if he caught her by the cliffs she was sure to get it! So she hurried across the grass and slipped into the fog hoping no one had seen her. She arrived at the side door of the mansion and opened the door silently before slipping inside. She walked up the steps and through another door that lead to the kitchen. She had been using the servants door for years to slip in and out of the castle and not once had she been caught. She walked down the hall and into the study where she was sure to find her father. She closed the door behind her and then stood respectfully in front of him. "Were you calling me father?" she asked with a smile. "Yes my dear, please come here." he said with his own soft smile. "I've been wanting to speak to you all day." "About what?" she asked sitting down in a chair across from him by the fire. The warmth was refreshing, so she warmed her hands while she waited for him to continue. "Have I done something to displease you?" she questioned when he didn't speak. "Of course not," he replied. "But I am however worried about you." "What for?" she asked curiously. "You have accepted Raul's proposal?" he asked. "Yes, of course. I love him." she answered with a smile. "Do you not approve?" "No I think he is a fine young man, and will make you a fine husband." her father remarked. "I just want to make sure you're happy, after all he will be leaving tomorrow." "I am aware of that," she frowned. "But I am willing to wait!" "Are you sure?" he asked. "There are other young men...." "No father..." she interrupted. "I love Raul and he's the man I wish to marry!" "Okay, you've always known your destiny." he smiled. "So I trust your judgement." "Thank you," she replied. "But there's no need to be concerned I promise you!" "Then we'll make arrangements for when he returns." her father smiled. Mac nodded and stood up. "Was that all you wished to speak about?" she asked. "For now..." he replied. "Goodnight." "Goodnight father." Mac said before disappearing out into the hall. She walked down the corridor and down the stairs. As she passed through the hall that lead to the front door the doorbell chimed. Mac wondered who would come calling so late and then headed to answer the door. But as she approached it, Esther stepped in front of her and opened it. "Is Miss Reynolds home?" a familar voice asked. "Why yes," Esther replied stepping aside. "She's right here. Miss Mackenzie! Someone's here to speak with you!" Mac smiled at the visitor and waited for her heart to stop pounding before she said another word. She stared at Raul as he walked into the entryway. "Why have you come this late?" she questioned him once she'd caught her breath. "I had to speak to you." he said quickly. "What for?....." she asked sensing that it was important. Raul didn't say a word, but only turned and started walking down the hall towards one of the parlors. Mac hurried after him but she heard Esther call after them, "Where do you think you two are going? You know you aren't to be alone, it just isn't proper!" "Oh Esther..." Raul sighed. "We're engaged now! I would think it would be okay if we talked privately for a moment don't you?" Esther stared at them and then threw her hands up in the air "Fine but if your father or grandmother hears about this I am not involved!" Mac smiled and giggled once before she turned and followed Raul into the parlor. She closed the door behind her and turned to face him. "Why are you here so late?" she asked again curiously."What is so important that it couldn't wait until tomorrow?" "I've just received news that my dearest friend in the world is coming for a visit." he said as he sat down in a chair near the fireplace. "A visit?" Mac asked. "But you're leaving tomorrow....how can you possibly....." "That's what I've come to talk to you about," he smiled. "Do you think your grandmother and father would allow him to stay here until I return?" Mac stared at him in disbelief! There was no possible way her family would allow it! It wouldn't be proper and the village would talk! "I don't believe so....." she finally responed. "But you're very welcome to ask." "Well I know what you must be thinking. But the situation would cause you no disgrace, I swear! You know I would never do anything to cause you embarrassment or scandal!" Mac knew he was speaking the truth, they had known each other for years and he had never done anything to her that had caused village gossip. He was the most considerate man she'd ever met, that was part of his charm. "What do you mean?" she finally asked. "Well my friend is bringing his cousin along.... so it would be as if she was visting you and bringing her chaperone along with her." he explained. "It's perfect and it would allow you to get acquainted with the man I consider my brother." "What is the name of the woman?" she questioned still unsure of the entire plan. "Miss Rianna Minor." he answered. "That's a very interesting name." Mac remarked. "Indeed it is, but believe me it is a family name." he replied. "I think it is a lovely name, but of course no lovelier than Mackenzie!" Mac smiled and blushed at his forwardness and then looked at him silently. "And what's the name of your friend, have you spoken to me about him?" she finally asked once her pulse was calm again. "I don't believe so, but we haven't spoken in years." he explained. "His name is Sir William Foster Abbott, but he is known to people as Billy." "I have heard that name before." Mac said. "Yes, his father is Sir John Abbott the businessman and banker." Raul informed her. "That's right." she agreed. "So would it be alright for me to discuss this with your family?" he asked as he stood. "As you wish," she smiled standing up to him. "Who am I to turn away your dearest friend?" "I will miss you while I am gone." he smiled taking her hand. "And I you...but you must go." she sighed. "And I accept that I am willing to wait for you." "I'd understand if you'd like to change your mind." he whispered. "No.... I love you." she insisted. Raul smiled and kissed her lightly on the forehead. He turned and walked out into the hall and toward the entryway. "I'll be back tomorrow to say farewell before I leave." he said once they reached the door. "Until then...." she whispered. She then watched him disappear into the fog wondering if after tomorrow she'd ever see him again. She then closed the door and walked upstairs. As she walked down the dark hall she jumped as someone called her name! Mackenzie turned around and spotted her grandmother standing in the doorway of her bedroom. "Good evening grandma!" she greeted her. "Why are you still awake? You should have been asleep hours ago. You need your rest!" "I need no such thing," she argued. "But I heard the doorbell.....Who was here at such a late hour?" "It was Raul...." Mac started. "He wishes to speak to you before he leaves tomorrow." "Is that so....." she smiled. "About?" "I'd rather he speak to you about it." Mac insisted. "But I don't know how you feel about it....well I guess we'll find out in the morning." Katherine remarked walking over to her. "Will you miss him?" "Yes of course, but he's not to see me upset." Mac responded. "He needs to concentrate, not worry about me here at home! I will be fine and before I know it, he'll return safe and sound!" "I hope you're right my darling, but you know things don't always...." Katherine started. "No," Mac interrupted. "He will return to me and we'll live a long happy life together." "Yes I am sure you will." Katherine agreed not wanting to upset her granddaughter. "Will it make you happy if I agree to his propsal?" Mac was very aware of her gandmother's hurry to change the subject but she wasn't about to object. In fact she preferred not speak of Raul's departure the following afternoon. "I am sure it will make things eaiser." she replied. "Well then I will give what he is going to say some serious thought," her grandmother agreed. "All I want is for it to be easy on you and for you to be happy. And if you will be happy with Raul then I will be happy to grant his request." "Thank you grandmother." Mac smiled as she hugged Katherine and kissed her cheek. "It's time for you to get some sleep," she instructed. "And I am sleepy as well, it's been a long day." "Very well then.....I'll see you in the morning." Katherine smiled and they hugged again and then headed in their own directions. Mac walked to her bedroom door and stopped just outside. She touched the handle and then turned it slowly. She stood there for a moment dreading the lonely dreams that would come with sleep and then slipped into the dark room, closing the door behind her. Tomorrow was a day she would say goodbye, maybe for a short time or maybe forever! The next morning Mac walked out of her room fully dressed and headed downstairs for breakfast. As she entered the dining room, she smiled at the sight of Raul sitting with her father and grandmother at the table. "Good morning darling," Katherine smiled. "Did you sleep well?" "Better than I expected," Mac replied as she went to sit next to Raul. "You're here early?" "Well I wanted to speak with your family," he explained before he kissed her cheek. "And this way I can spend more time with you before I leave." Mac smiled but her heart sank. "Raul was explaining his request," Mac's father stated. "What are your thoughts?" "It's perfectly okay with me," Mac answered. "It is of course, your decision." "Well I see nothing wrong with it," Katherine smiled. "Do you son?" "Well as long as the young woman will be here too, I see no problem with this arrangement." he replied before standing. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have work to do." "Yes..." Katherine stated. "I have things to attend to as well. Raul I wish you luck....please write often. And don't worry, we'll take good care of Mackenzie." They both left the room, then Raul turned to Mac. "Are you positive you're okay with this?" he asked taking her hand. "Of course," she smiled. "I'd love to meet both of them. Besides you know I'd do anything for you!" Raul nodded and then stood. "Shall we walk before I leave?" he asked. Mac nooded and then asked, "When are you leaving?" "The train leaves at eleven." he replied. "That's only two hours away." she whispered. "I know..." he started to say. "But let's make the most of it shall we?" Mac sighed and then followed him outside. He took her hand and they began to walk along the cliffs. "It's beautiful here," he said. "I will miss it." "You don't have to leave," Mac insisted. "We could leave together and no one would ever find us!" "That would break both our families hearts and duty calls you know that," he remarked. "I have to go but it will only be for a little while I swear!" "But what if...." Mac started to ask. "There are no what if's," he interrupted. "I will be back and we will get married. We'll spend the rest of our days together." "I just wish......" she sighed. "I wish that too my dear," he replied. "But I must go and you have to be strong!" "I am trying, but it's so hard!" Mac cried. "I'll miss you so much and the thought of being apart from you breaks my heart!" "It breaks mine too, but you knew this day was coming." he reminded her. "But this time will pass quickly and I will write often. Besides as long as I have you here waiting for me, nothing can keep me away!" "I hope you're right." she whispered. Raul pulled Mac close and hugged her tightly. "I love you," he whispered. "I've loved you since the day we met and I will always love you." "I love you too!" she cried as tears spilled down her cheeks. "Don't cry sweetheart," he said wiping her tears away with his thumb. "Be strong for me!" Mac nodded and bit her lower lip nervously and then waited for him to continue. "My mother gave me this to give to you, it's been in the family for years and it's time to pass it on to the next generation." he explained as he pulled something out of his pocket. He picked up her hand and she stared in awe and surprise as he slipped an emerald ring on her finger that looked as beautiful as the the day it was first worn. "I can't accept this," she gasped. "It's too precious!" "It belongs to the oldest son's wife and since you will be my wife it belongs to you. And when you look at it you will think of me." he smiled bringing her hand to his lips. "I will treasure it, but I will always think of you." she replied. Raul kissed her forehead and they continued to walk in silence. But after what seemed like only seconds to Mac, Raul stopped and stared down at her. Mac shook her head and she knew it was time. "You can't go!" she cried. "I need you!" "Be strong my girl," he whispered pulling her close. "I will think of you always but I must go!" "No...no....no!" she cried holding tightly to his hand. "I love you....stay with me!" "I will return soon, you must believe that." he said soothingly. "I promise, besides you must look after my friend that will keep you busy. He'll be here tomorrow sometime." "But I want you, not him." she whispered. "I must go or I'll miss my train." he insisted pulling away. He quickly hugged her again and kissed her roughly. "I love you my sweet, always remember that no matter what." he reassured her. "No Raul, I beg you don't leave!" she cried. "Goodbye," he waved walking away. "I will write soon!" Mac stood there and watched him disappear and when he had, she collapsed onto the grass crying hysterically. Would she ever see him again? And if she did would things be the same? The next afternoon Mac was in the garden when she heard someone approaching from behind her. She spun around on the bench she was sitting on and stared into the most intense blue eyes she had ever seen. "Who are you?" she asked when she had regained her control. "My name is William Abbott, but you may call me Billy." he replied walking over in front of her. "And you must be Miss Mackenzie Reynolds?" "Yes." she rasped unable to find her voice or look away from his gaze. "I am Raul's friend." he said when she said nothin more. "Yes I know who you are, but where is your cousin?" she asked. "She will be here in two weeks, something came up at home." "Oh dear," Mac said. "But you must know this won't be...." "Proper." he finished for her. "Well yes...." she said. "Don't worry." he smiled. His smile warmed her like no other and she was unable to look away. It was as if she were under a spell. "What do you mean?" she asked finally. "I mean I will do nothing to cause you disgrace," he replied. "I was sent out here by your grandmother to fetch you, she wishes you to come in for tea!" "Yes, yes of course." she said as she stood up. Billy smiled at her and offered her his elbow which she happily accepted. They walked in silence back to the house and Mac knew there was something behind those intense blue eyes and if it was the last thing she did, she was going to discover what it was. "So Mr. Abbott....." Mac said. "You and Raul are very close I hear." "First please call me Billy, and yes, we met when we were boys and the bond was instant." he replied. "Unfortunately we have lost touch over the years and I was hoping to fix that with this visit but...." "Yes, well he promised to be home soon." Mac interrupted. "Besides this gives us a chance to get to know each other better without him watching our every move." Billy laughed and then stared at her. "Is there something on your mind?" she asked noticing his gaze upon her. "I'm just realizing how lucky Raul is to have found someone as beautiful and kind as you are," he remarked. "He is a very lucky man and I can only hope to be as lucky some day." Mac blushed a deep crimson and then glanced away out the window to stare at the rising fog. "Please tell me about your cousin." Mac asked trying to change the subject. "Rianna is a very head strong girl, yet her manners are more refined than anyone I know." he answered. "She is very kind and gentle. I have a feeling you two will get along nicely." "I hope so.....she sounds charming." Mac smiled. "How long did you say she'd be delayed?" "About two weeks, depending on the situation at home." he replied. "But it is very exciting and nice to meet you." Mac smiled and then sat her teacup down on the table. "Have you settled into your room?" she asked standing up. "No not yet, when I arrived I was sent to fetch you for tea." he answered. "Well then let me show you to your room," she offered. "I am sure after such a long travel you'd like to rest." "Yes I am feeling a bit tired." he replied. They walked out into the hall and Mac lead him up the stairs and down the hall. She stopped outside a door only across the hall from her room and opened the door. "Your bags should be inside," she remarked. "Please let me know if there's anything else you need, my room is across the hall." "Thank you Mackenzie." he smiled. "Dinner will be at seven, please join us in the dining room." she informed him. "I'll be looking forward to it." he smiled again before disappearing into his room. Mac leaned against the wall and breathed deeply. What an effect he had on her, it was exhausting! She shook her head slightly and then headed across the hall to lie down. All she needed was a nap and she would be perfectly fine. Later that evening after dinner Mac slipped out of her room and into the dark hall. She heard nothing, so she hurried silently down the hall toward the stairs. She walked into the quiet kitchen and then made her way down to the door that led outside to the cliffs. As she walked across the dewy grass she breathed in the fresh salt air thankfully. Her head had been spinning all day and the fresh air was exactly what she needed. The fog was rolling in again, which allowed her to walk unseen by anyone that might be looking out the mansion windows, and she allowed the crashing sound of the sea to clear her mind. She walked away from the mansion and headed along the normal path she took every evening. It was the path she and Raul had taken often when they wanted to be alone. As she walked she suddenly heard a sound from behind her. "Hello?" she called into the darkness. "Is someone there?" She heard nothing and shook the feeling away. No one else was there with her, it was only her imagination! Her feelings were so jumbled up, she was hearing things now! She needed to calm herself and then things would be fine. Suddenly she heard the sound again and she spun around just in time to see a shadow float through the fog and disappear. "Who's out there?" she cried. "Show yourself this instant or I'll scream!" No one came forward and that scared her all the more. There was no way she was going back the way she came, what if the person was waiting for her? She couldn't risk it, but she had to get back inside and do it quickly. So she hurried forward and remembered the path circled back around to the front of the mansion. As she walked, the fog thickened and even though she wanted to hurry she had to slow down for fear of falling off the cliff's edge into the water. It had happen to her before so it could happen again if she wasn't careful. She heard the sound again and this time she didn't stop, she continued forward and picked up the pace. The fog continued to thicken and she heard the sound drawing closer. As she hurried along she stumbled and fell to the ground. She opened her eyes and to her horror she was staring down at the crashing waves before her. She was hanging partly over the cliff's edge and if she wasn't careful she'd fall completely. |

She scooted back and picked herself up to her hands and knees and crawled away. But she heard the sound again and that made her hurry on again. She was close to the edge and as she headed forward, wiping tears from her eyes, she stumbled again and went over the edge! She let out a scream and grabbed the edge. "Help!" she cried. "Someone help me!" She grasped the dirt on the edge and tried to find a foot hole to boost herself up, but there was nothing she could do but scream. "Is someone there?" she called into the darkness. "Please show yourself....and help me please!" No one came and the noise had stopped. But even if it hadn't all she could hear were the waves below. Her heart pounded and she could feel herself slipping more and more every second. "Someone please help me, I don't want to die...please help me!" Suddenly she heard a faint voice calling her name. "Is someone there?" she cried. "Please help me!" "Mackenzie are you out there?" a familar voice called. It was Billy, thank God, he'd come to rescue her! "Billy over here!" she cried. "Help me!" "Mackenzie is that you?" he called. "Where are you? " "Here, please hurry!" she answered through her sobs. "Help me!" Suddenly his shadow appeared above her and his hands clasped hers. "I am here." he assured her as he lifted her up with ease. She collasped in his arms in sobs and all he could do was hold her tightly and try to sooth her. "You're okay now, I am here." he whispered running a hand up and down her back. "Everything is okay I promise, don't cry." Mac tried to control her sobs but it was no use. She'd never been so happy to see anyone in her entire life. "Oh thank you....thank you!" she cried. "I thought I was going to die!" "No you're fine," he assured her. "I am here." Mac wiped the tears from her eyes, but didn't pull away from him. His touch was comforting and she needed that right now no matter how bad it looked. "What happen?" he asked her. "Why were you out here all alone?" "I was going for a walk and I heard something behind me," she explained. "I panicked and stumbled, falling over the edge!" "Oh dear, was someone really out here?" he questioned. "I think so...." she replied. "I saw a shadow through the fog." "But you didn't see a person?" he asked. "Well no...." she answered. "But wait, what are you doing out here?" "I saw you from my window sneaking out across the grass, but by the time I got out here you had disappeared." he answered. "I wanted to follow you and make sure you were okay. And then I heard you screaming, so I came to find you and thank God I did or..." Suddenly he hugged her tightly, a gesture that shocked her to the core. "Come on let's get you inside and warmed up." he said letting her go but taking her hand. They walked quickly back to the mansion and Mac showed him the side entrance. "We have to be quiet," she whispered. "No one knows I go out there at night." He nodded and followed her inside and up to her room. As they approached her room someone called, "What on earth happen to you?" Mac and Billy spun around to see her grandmother and father standing at the top of the stairs down the hall from them. Mac gasped and knew she'd been caught! "We're waiting!" her father glared. "I was ah....." Mac started. "Mac and I went out for a walk and while we were out Mac stumbled and fell, getting her dress dirty." Billy cut in. "We're okay I promise." "Is that true Mackenzie?" her father asked. "Yes father, that's truly what happened." "Well then...." Katherine stated. "If you're okay we'll be heading back to bed." "Goodnight." Mac called. She then turned to Billy and mouthed, "Thank you." Billy smiled and then stepped back. "I'll see you in the morning." he said. Mac nodded and then disappeared into her room, shutting the door behind her. She leaned against it and sighed. She now owed him her life! The next morning Mac discovered that her father had left early that morning for a business trip, but she knew the minute he returned he'd want to know the real story about last night. But what would she tell him? She quickly pushed the thought out of her mind as she walked outside, knowing that she'd have time to mull it over later. As he walked through the gardens her mind traveled back to the night before and how Billy had saved her life. Without him she would have been stranded there for who knows how long? And eventually she would have had to let go! The thought was unbearable and it made her sick to her stomach. But the truth of the matter was she owed him her life. Without him she wouldn't be here and they both knew it. The only question was how would he act about the whole situation? She didn't have to wait long to discover the answer to the question, because several minutes later Billy approached her from behind. He touched her on the shoulder and she jumped, nearly landing on the ground next to the bench she was sitting on. "You startled me!" she gasped. "Sorry," he replied as he sat down next to her. "I just wanted to speak with you.....about last night." "Oh..." was all Mac could say. "I want you to know that I don't feel you owe me anything," he explained. "I was just glad I could be of some help. If anything would have happened to you I....Raul would have been devastated." "Yes of course and I can never thank you enough for coming to my rescue," she smiled. "I will forever be in your debt." "That's not necessary," he insisted. "I am just glad you're safe and here with...." he stopped and looked at her intensely. "Is something wrong?" she questioned. " Ah...no everything is just fine." he replied shaking his head. "When do you think you'll hear from Raul?" "In the next day or so I hope, but I am really not sure." she replied. "I am worried about him though." "Raul never breaks a promise and if he said he's coming home, he'll be here sooner or later." Billy reassured her. Mac smiled sadly, hoping he was right then looked down at her hands. "You miss him already don't you?" he asked. Mac noddeed but didn't look up. She didn't trust herself to look into his eyes, and if she wasn't careful she was afraid she might say something she'd regret later. He just had an effect on her that she couldn't figure out why! It just wasn't right, she was engaged after all. She was promised to another man, this man's best friend! Suddenly Mac stood up and hurried off down the path. "Mackenzie!" she heard him call. "What's wrong?" Mac didn't look back but she heard him close behind her. She ran and ran, but finally he caught up to her. He grabbed her by the elbow and spun her around to face him, holding her against him. He stared down at her and she looked up at him. There was magic between them, but it wasn't supposed to be there. Her mind was running a mile a minute, but suddenly all time stopped and they were the only two people who mattered. 'Oh G**', Mac thought. 'What's going to happen?' Billy looked down at her and his mind raced. She was unlike any other woman he had ever met. She was glowing, bright, and more beautiful than any one he'd ever seen. She was special, but it wasn't right to think this way about her. She was marrying his best friend for G** sake! He couldn't be falling in love with her! I mean how could he? They'd only met yesterday, but he could feel something in him changing. He found himself thinking about her and he was drawn to her all the time. He kept trying to think of ways to be around her and it wasn't right. But he couldn't hold back....he just couldn't! He looked into her deep brown eyes and his lips slowly moved toward hers. But suddenly they heard some calling their names. "Mackenzie, Billy?" Esther called. "Dang it." Billy said under his breath. "Esther..." Mac whispered. Billy dropped his grip on her and stepped away from her looking at the ground. "Esther we're over here!" Mac called. "Is something wrong?" Esther appeared quickly and smiled. "Oh no dear.....but I have something for you." she answered. She held an envelope out to Mac and she snatched it up. "Who's it from?" Billy asked. "Raul," Mac whispered in shock. "But I don't know how it could be here now....." "It was mailed from here," Esther said. "He must have sent it so you could hear from him quickly." Mac held the letter to her heart and slowly walked away. "Come on," Esther said to Billy. "Lets give her some time alone." Billy didn't want her to read the letter, but there was no stopping her. He had to let this go....for it would never happen not in his wildest dreams. So he followed Esther inside and before he disappeared he glanced back and discovered that Mac was sitting on the bench not looking at the letter, but at him. After Billy disappeared Mac looked down at her unopened letter. Her hands shook as she carefully opened it and unfolded the paper inside. Tears filled her eyes as she began to read... My Dearest Mackenzie, By now I am off on the battlefield, but my heart will always be with you. I miss you so much already and I have yet to leave on my journey. I know things will be rough but I will be okay. I promise you I will return soon and then we will be together forever. For now, never forget that I love you and that you are always with me no matter where my duty takes me. I will write again soon, but until then say a prayer for me. I love you Mackenzie and I always have, since the minute I laid eyes on your beautiful angelic face. Always remember that I am thinking of you..... Love Always, Raul Tears spilled down her cheeks as she clutched the letter to her chest. Her whole body shook with her sobs and soft sounds escaped from her mouth. "Why," she whispered. "Why did you have to leave me...Why?" She breathed deeply and slowed her heart so that she could regain control before returning to the mansion. No one could see her like this....no one...not even Billy. She folded the letter in half and stuffed it into her skirt pocket. She then stood and walked slowly back into the mansion, knowing that things were about to change in her life once again. As she entered the mansion she heard voices in the sitting room down the hall. She slowly walked toward the room and stopped outside the room when she heard Billy's voice. "Is she really in love with Raul?" he asked. "Well of course.....why would you ask?" Esther questioned. "Well I just thought this might have been an arranged marriage." he replied. "No....Miss Mackenzie and Raul have known each other for years and have been courting for over two years." Esther explained. "Mackenzie always wanted to take things slow." Mac heard Billy sigh and then Esther asked, "Why are you so interested in their relationship?" "I was just curious that's all....." he insisted softly. "I want them both to be happy." Mac stood outside the door several minutes longer and then backed up against the wall across the hall. 'Why is he so interested in whether I love Raul or not?', she wondered. 'Is he....no that's impossible!' She quickly pushed the thought from her mind and stood up straight, sighing deeply. She quietly walked past the sitting room and down the hall to the stairway. As she started to walk up the stairs she heard Billy call her. "Mac!" he called again. "Are you okay? What did Raul have to say?" Mac turned around just as he walked up behind her. She bumped into him and swayed forward. Billy reached out just as she was about to fall forward and pulled her close. "Careful." he whispered. Mac locked eyes with him and her breath caught in her throat. "Are you okay?" he asked. Mac shook her head but didn't speak because she couldn't find her voice. Billy's gasped loosened slightly and then he let go altogether. "So what did Raul have to say?" he questioned. "Well there wasn't much to say," she finally answered. "He wrote it before he left." "I see." Billy said curiously sensing that Mac didn't want to share her letter. "I am sure you'll be hearing from him soon." "Yes I hope so," she replied stepping past him. "I am worried." "Why?" he asked her as they finished climbing the stairs. "He's only been gone since yesterday." "I know but I just have this feeling....." she replied as she looked at the expression on his face and it was clear he didn't understand at all. "Never mind....you wouldn't understand." Mac started to walk away, but Billy grabbed her elbow. "Wait Mackenzie," he whispered. "I want to understand." She looked at him and knew he was speaking the truth. "I just have a feeling that something is wrong and that something is going to happen to him. I really can't explain it, it's just a feeling I have in the pit of my stomach." Billy nodded and then took her hand. "Everything will be fine and he will be home before you know it," he smiled. "I promise you." Mac smiled and her cheeks grew warm because he was touching her. She liked the feeling, but if someone were to see them she wouldn't know what to say. As she was about to pull away he sensed her decision and dropped her hand. "If you'll excuse me.....I think it would be best if I laid down for awhile." "Of course...." he nodded. "I'll see you at dinner." Mac smiled then walked to her room, as she reached her door she glanced down the hall and found Billy staring at her. She smiled and then disappeared inside, more confused than ever. Several evenings later Mac looked out her window and sighed. She had to get away, but she was frightened by the last time she had gone outside at night alone. What if the person was out there again? Would she get away again or meet her fate? She shook her head and stood. She had to get some fresh air, there was nothing to be afraid of and she wouldn't wander far. Winter had set in and she grabbed her cloak and then disappered out into the cold night. The cool air was refreshing and she sighed, she could see her cold breath in front of her. The fog was light so she could see around her as she walked toward the cliffs. The sound of crashing waves soothed her confusion and for a brief moment she forgot all of her troubles she was facing. She didn't think of Billy or of Raul, she only thought of the waves below. As she glanced out over the sea she saw approaching clouds and she wondered if a snow storm was coming. By the looks of the sky, snow would be there by morning and lots of it. She smiled at the thought. Christmas was quickly approaching and she couldn't wait for the parties and the endless company that would be passing through as the holidays approached. Her father had not yet returned from his trip but she expected him any day now. She missed him greatly, but as soon as he returned the mansion would be decorated for the ocassion. She could hardly wait! Mac let out a sigh and then turned to walk to the mansion. As she waked toward the side of the mansion she heard hoof beats and the sound of a carriage approaching. 'Who would be arriving this late in the evening?' she wondered. 'Father?' She hurried inside and upstairs to the dark quiet kitchen. As she entered the hallway she heard the doorbell ring and Esther hurried to answer it. Mac hung up her cloak and hurried to see who was arriving. As she walked down the hall the person she saw not her father, but a young woman about her age. She was very beautiful with long redish brown hair, and brown eyes. Her smile was bright and her cheeks were rosy from the cold. Mac stepped forward to introduce herself but as she did Billy rushed past her. "Rianna!" he cried. "You're early cousin!" At the sound of his voice, she turned and grinned brightly. "Billy!" she cried as he scooped her into his arms. "It's good to see you....." "Did you finish things at home?" he asked. "Yes." she said hesitantly. "Did you travel all this way alone?" he asked. "Well.....no." she answered ringing her hands. "What's wrong cousin?" he questioned. "What are you not telling me?" Just then a striking young man around Billy's age walked through the door carrying luggage. "Rianna sweetheart," he said. "I think all our things are here." "Billy," Rianna said. "I'd like you to meet my husband, JT Holstrom." "Nice to meet you," JT smiled. "My Rianna has told me so much about you!" Billy stood there stunned with his mouth hanging open. "Billy!" Rianna hissed. "It's a...a pleasure to meet you as well." Billy finally said. "I had no idea..." "No one did," Rianna interrupted. "But..." "There's no need to explain," Billy smiled. "As long as you're happy!" Mac watched the reunion and greetings and then turned to leave. "Mackenzie!" Billy called suddenly remembering her. "Where are you going?" "I was going to go to bed." she answered. "But you haven't been introduced yet," he smiled holding a hand out to her. "Come here..." Mac walked towards him and accepted his hand. "Rianna...this is Miss Mackenzie Reynolds." he introduced. "And Mackenzie...this is my cousin Mrs. Rianna Holstrom and her husband JT Holstrom." "Nice to meet you both." she smiled. "The pleasure is all ours." Rianna smiled. "You must be tired," Mac said. "Please allow me to show you to a room. Your bags have already been taken upstairs." They both nodded and then they all followed her up the stairs. "If you need anything Esther will be glad to help you." Mac said once they'd stopped outside a door down the hall from Mac's room. "Goodnight." Rianna called. "We'll see you in the morning for breakfast." Mac smiled as Rianna and JT disappeared inside. Mac turned and started to walk to her room when Billy grabbed her arm. "Is something wrong?" he asked. "No, why would you ask?" she questioned. "Well you seem...upset." he replied as they walked down the hall. "I'm just tired." she answered. "Are you sure?" he asked with concern. "Yes of course," she answered. "Why would I lie?" "You wouldn't..." he smiled. "But you would tell me if there was something bothering you, right?" Mac nodded and then stopped at her door. "Goodnight." she smiled. "Goodnight..." he smiled back. Then suddenly he picked up her hand and kissed her fingertips softly. Mac stood there silently and then quickly disappeared into her room, shutting the door firmly behind her. "What is happening?" she gasped. The next morning Mac walked downstairs to find her father in the dining room with her grandmother. "Father!" she cried. "You're back." "Good morning sweetheart," he beamed. "I missed you." Mac leaned down and kissed his cheek before she sat down at the table. "How was your trip?" she asked curiously. "Where did you go?" "My trip was wonderful," he answered. "But where I went is a secret!" Mac smiled, but said nothing. Her father was always going places secretly and usually it was for a surprise for her! "Now that you're back can we start decorating for Christmas?" she asked. "Of course," he grinned. "I'll have the servants start immediately!" Mac smiled again and then stood up. "Aren't you going to eat?" Katherine asked. "I'm not very hungry this morning," she answered, walking towards the doorway. "I'll see you both at dinner!" They nodded and then Mac walked to get her cloak. As she stepped outside she discovered a layer of snow on the ground everywhere. "I was right." she beamed. She headed towards the stables and then asked one of the hands to saddle her horse. As she raced out of the barn and down the front lawn slope she watched more snow fall around her. She let out a squeal and then slowed the horse to walk. "What a beautiful morning!" she sighed. Just then she heard hoof beats behind her and she turned to see someone approaching her at a rapid pace. "Please don't let it be Billy." she whispered. But it wasn't, to her surprise it was Rianna. "Good morning!" she greeted. "It's a beautiful morning." Rianna smiled. "Isn't it." Mac agreed. "What brings you here?" "I saw you leaving and thought I'd join you," Rianna said. "I thought I'd never catch up with you at the rate you were going!" They both laughed and then set their horses to walking again. "How was your trip?" Mac asked. "Wonderful, it's so beautiful here," she answered. "How have you and Billy been getting along?" "Fine I suppose..." Mac answered hesitantly. "I sense there's more to that story..." Rianna pushed. Mac could tell Rianna was one who wanted the whole story and would settle for nothing less. So...she'll have to tell her sooner or later and now was as good a time as any. "Things aren't as I expected..." Mac replied. "How so?" Rianna asked. "He's different from most young men around here...he's more bold...more forward." Mac frowned. "And you don't like it?" Rianna asked. "I'm not suppose to like it...I'm engaged...engaged to his best friend." Mac answered. "That's not what I asked," Rianna said. "Do you like it?" "I don't know..." Mac sighed. "Yes you do," Rianna smiled. "I won't say a word, if anything maybe I can help. He is my cousin after all." "Well he makes me feel different...different than Raul does I mean." Mac sighed. "How?" Rianna asked. "Billy makes me aware of everything, he makes me come alive everytime he's around me." Mac answered. "But when I'm with Raul I feel I have to act a certain way, I feel confined..." "I understand what you're feeling...JT makes me feel the same way." she replied. "I just wish I hadn't had to hide our relationship from my parents for so long. And when I finally did tell them, they insisted we marry immediately. Which of course was fine with me!" Mac smiled and then sighed. "But I can't feel this way...I love Raul." she explained. "Do you?" Rianna asked. "Of course...I do." Mac stammered. "Are you sure?" Rianna asked. "I think you need to think this through carefully before you make a huge life changing mistake. Because it seems to me that you may be falling for Billy...How does Billy feel?" "I don't know," Mac said as they turned their horses around. "We've never talked about it and it could just be me." "But you won't know for sure until you talk to him." Rianna smiled. "I could never do that," Mac insisted. "Never!" "Never say never," Rianna replied. "People can do amazing things when love is involved." Mac sighed and then stared off into the still falling snow. "I'm so confused..." she whispered. "Aren't we all!" Rianna laughed. "But eventually something happens and all becomes clear, just wait and see." "I don't know if I can wait..." Mac replied. "You have too and you will," Rianna assured her. "Just follow your heart, that's all you can do for now." Mac nodded and then smiled. "Now I think I'll leave you to your thoughts." Then she waved and sent her horse into a gallop. Mac watched her disappear and then turned her horse towards the cliff. There was so much to think about! |

The next two weeks flew by and Christmas was quickly approaching. Mac tried to keep Billy at a distance, but she noticed they kept spending more and more time together and as much as she fought it they only grew closer. One late afternoon, Mac stood in front of her full-length mirror and examined her appearance. Her father would be there any moment to escort her downstairs to the party and she wanted to look her best. Her dress was dark green silk and it only enhanced her creamy skin. It had no sleeves and a low cut back, which showed off her shoulders and back. And the skirt flowed to the floor and then a train trailed behind her. Her hair was pinned up in ringlets and it cascaded around her face. She really looked like the princess of the ball. Suddenly there was a knock on the door and her father entered. "Are you ready darling?" he asked. Mac nodded and then accepted his elbow. They walked down the hall and Mac could hear the voice and the music from the ballroom. She smiled at her father and then they descended down the stairs. They entered the room and many heads turned to stare. Mac smiled brightly and they walked over to her grandmother. "You look lovely sweetheart." she cooed. "Thank you." Mac blushed. "Mackenzie," her father said. "I hope you don't mind but...I asked Billy to be your date this evening." Mac's mouth dropped but she quickly smiled and shook her head. "That will be fine." she lied. How would she handle spending an entire night on Billy's arm? Could she control herself? Just then someone tapped her on her shoulder and she shivered as a sensation slid down her spine. She tried to regain control, but she couldn't, she was lost forever! The dance quickly ended but another one followed and before she knew it they had danced for an hour. The musicians took a quick break and Billy asked, "Would you like to get some fresh air?" Mac nodded, not able to find her voice and followed him outside, wondering if it was a smart decision on her part. Would she be able to control herself or would she be lost in his eyes forever? They walked out onto the back terrace and then headed into the latern lit garden. "Where are we going?" Mac asked as Billy took her hand. "Over here." he replied as they continued to walk further into the garden. Finally Billy stopped in front of a bench and sat down, pulling Mac down next to him. "Billy...what are..." she started to say. "Shh..." he whispered, still holding her hand. "But..." she sighed. "I don't understand! We shouldn't be out here, not alone!" "This will only take a few minutes," he said. "I promise." Mac stared at him curiously and her heart beat increased. They shouldn't be out here alone! What would people think? She was promised to someone else... "Mackenzie," he said grabbing her attention again. "There's something here and I don't know how to handle it." "What do you mean?" she asked, knowing exactly what he meant. "Don't lie to me Mackenzie," he remarked. "You know there is something between us...admit it!" "I don't know what you're getting at Billy." she insisted. "We need to be getting back inside, people will wonder where we are!" She stood up and started to walk away, but Billy leaned forward and grabbed her by the waist, pulling her down again. "Please wait..." he begged. "I know you're supposej to marry Raul, but you know you don't love him...you love me! I know you do...just admit it!" "I will admit no such thing," she cried. "How dare you assume something like that! I love...I love Raul with...with all my heart!" "No you don't!" he insisted. "Please Mackenzie...I love you! I love everything about you...there's nothing about you that doesn't do something for me!" Mac stared at him and tears filled her eyes. She loved Raul, didn't she? 'Oh G**', she thought. 'I do love Billy...but', Suddenly Billy pulled Mac to him and he pressed his lips to hers and kissed her passionately. Mac started to push him away with her fists, but instead she wound her arms around his neck and pulled him closer. She let out a whimper and leaned closer, not being able to get close enough! Billy leaned away and smiled down at her. "You do love me, don't you." he said. Mac looked up into his eyes and nodded with a shy smile. Billy kissed her again and then stood up. "We'd better get back..." he said sadly. "They'll send someone to look for us!" Mac agreed and then followed him back to the party. They entered through the same way they had left and discovered no one had missed them at all. The party was in full swing and they quickly joined the other couples on the dance floor, wanting only to be in each other's arms. Hours later the party ended and when the last guests left or headed up to their guest's rooms Billy, Mac, Rianna, and JT all headed into the parlor. "This has been an incredible evening!" Rianna remarked. "Yes, I have enjoyed myself greatly." JT smiled as he and Rianna sat down on the sofa. Mac and Billy sat across from them and as she watched JT take Rianna's hand she wished Billy would do the same, but she knew it wouldn't be possible. Just then Mac looked down at the coffee table and spotted a letter addressed to her. "When did this arrive?" she asked as she reached for it. They all shrugged their shoulders and then watched her expression go from happiness to shear disappointment. "It's from Raul..." she whispered as she slowly opened the envelope and began to read: My Dearest Mackenzie, I know it's been weeks since I've written you, but I have the most wonderful news! They are allowing me to come home for a visit! Isn't that wonderful? I can just imagine the look of happiness on your face and your beautiful smile. I will be arriving home the week before Christmas and I will be there for three days. I suppose some time together is better than none at all. I miss you so much and I have some news for you when we see one another, however, I am not sure how you will take it. I can only hope you will be happy for me. I miss you very much and I can't hardly wait to see you again. Being apart for so long has not dimmed your picture in my mind and everyday you are with me no matter where I go. You are what keeps me going through these horrible days. Things here are gruesome and sometimes unbearable, but I am dealing as well as can be expected. Just know that I think of you often and wonder how you pass the days. How is Billy doing? Are you two growing close, that is my one true wish! I must leave you now for I need some rest, but I will be home soon my dear, you can count on that! Until we see one another again say a prayer for me and remember I care for you deeply! Love Always, Raul Mac dropped the letter into her lap and tears steamed down her cheeks. "What's wrong Mackenzie?" Rianna asked in shock. "Raul...Raul is coming home." she stammered. "Sometime in the next several days!" They all gasped and Billy's face went white. "No..." he whispered. "No..." Mac looked at him sadly and shook her head. Then without warning she stood and fled the room, running all the way to her room. What was she to do now? How could she break Raul's heart? No...she couldn't! He needed her now more than ever! She could never do that to him...Never! She'd have to put her feelings aside and do what was right! She'd marry Raul and as soon as possible, that was all she could do! Mac threw herself onto her bed and sobbed until she drifted into a restless sleep that only left her loving Billy more than ever! Two days later Mac was sitting in the garden when a hand touched her shoulder! She jumped to her feet and spun around! When she saw the person in front of her she let out a gasp and then smiled fakely! "Raul!" she cried. "I've missed you!" He swept her into his arms and swung her around. "I"ve missed you too my dear, more than you know." he whispered into her ear. He sat her down then stepped away to look at her. "You're more beautiful than ever before!" he remarked. "Oh I've missed you, I can't seem to say it enough!" Mac smiled and tried to be happy to see him, but her heart wasn't in it! "Come," he said. "Let's go into the house where the others are waiting! I have an announcement to make!" Mac accepted the elbow he offered her and then allowed him to lead her inside. They walked into the parlor and to her surprise everyone was there, Billy, Rianna, JT, and even someone she did not know. She smiled at them all and then waited for Raul to introduce her. "Mackenzie, I would like you to meet Miss Brittany Hodges. Brittany this is Miss Mackenzie Browning." "It's a pleasure to meet you," Brittany said. "I've heard so much about you!" Mac shook her hand and then waited for Raul to say more. "Now if you'll excuse us," Raul said. "I need to speak with Mackenzie alone again, I only wanted her to meet Miss Hodges." They all nodded and then left the room. "Why is she here?" Mac asked. "I don't understand?" "Do you remember in my last letter that I said I had some news?" he questioned. "Yes..." Mac said with hesitance. "Please sit down," he instructed. "We really need to talk!" "Is something wrong?" she asked, sitting next to him. "Not exactly." he replied. "Well then did I do something wrong?" she asked. "Oh no darling...you could never do something wrong." he smiled. "Actually I am the one who has done something wrong!" "What do you mean?" she asked. "I don't understand?" "Mackenzie, things have changed and I can't marry you." he explained. Mac gasped in shock and her hand clutched her chest. "Why?" she asked. "I don't..." "When I arrived on the battle field I met Miss Hodges in a local town," he started to explain. "She's a nurse...and well we grew closer and I love her Mackenzie...do you understand that?" "But what about us?" she asked. "Don't you love me?" "Of course," he smiled. "I have always and will always love you, but in a different way. I love you as my dearest friend and even as my sister." "I can't believe this..." she whispered. "One of the reasons I came home was to introduce her to the family," he continued. "Then three days from now we are to be married and then I will return to my duty and she will stay here." Mac's stomach did a flop and a weight was lifted off her shoulders. "Can you accept this?" he asked taking her hand. Mac nodded and then said, "I could have never married you...I love someone else." "Who?" Raul asked nervously. "B...Billy..." she smiled. "We love each other!" Raul looked at her for a moment and then smiled. "I was hoping that would happen," he replied. "Well not at first, but then after I met Brittany I hoped you'd fall for one another! He's a good man and I know he'll make you happy!" "Really?" she asked. "You approve?" "Of course...I want you to be happy." he smiled. Mac stood and then walked to the door. "Where are you going?" he asked. "To talk to Billy." she replied. Raul nodded and then watched her disappear. Mac found Billy out by the cliffs staring into the sea. As she approached him he said, "It's over, isn't it?" Mac walked up behind him and placed a hand on his shoulder. "It's far from over Mr. Abbott." she whispered into his ear. Billy spun around and stared at her in disbelief. "Miss Hodges is here to marry Raul, three days from now." she explained. "Which means..." Billy cut her off and scooped her into his arms. He pressed his lips to hers and then sat her to the ground. "I must speak to your father right away," he insisted. "You can go back to the house and I'll find you when I'm finished." Mac nodded and then turned to go back to the house. "I love you!" he called. Mac turned around and answered, "I love you too!" Later that night Mac stared out her window and wondered why she hadn't heard from Billy yet. Had her father disapproved? She sighed and then grabbed her cloak. "I need some fresh air." she said to herself. She slipped out the way she normally did and then walked to the cliffs to clear her mind. So much had happened to her recently! Her head was spinning, but to be truthful she had never been happier in her entire life. Billy made her come alive like never before and she could see herself with no one else in life. He had been sent to her and they would be together. Suddenly she heard her name being called through the mist that was coming in and she recognized the voice as her father's. She hurried to the mansion door and slipped inside knowing she'd be in serious trouble if she were to get caught out by the cliffs. She'd never hear the end of it! She walked up the stairs to her father's office, knowing he'd be there and closed the door behind her. "You wished to speak with me, father?" she asked. "Yes...please come sit with me." he replied. "Have I done something?" she asked, sitting across from him. "Of course not," he smiled. "Billy came to speak to me today, as did Raul!" "And?" she pushed. "Do you accept Raul's decision?" he asked. "Of course, I want him to be happy." she replied. "Then do you accept Billy's proposal?" he asked with a slight smile. "Oh yes...I love him more than life itself!" she cooed. "Do you disagree with me?" "As long as you're happy my dear." he smiled. "Oh I've never been happier father," she smiled. "I want to marry him more than anything else in this world!" "Then you shall be married three days from now," he replied. "Everything will be ready then." Mac smiled and then stood. "Goodnight father and thank you." she said. He nodded and then he watched her walk to the door and slip into the hall. As Mac stepped into the hall she gasped as she bumped into someone! "Oh excuse me!" she said, turning to see who it was. Suddenly she grinned as she stared into those intense blue eyes she had come to love! "Billy!" she cried. He wrapped his arms around her and they kissed softly. Mac lifted her head to stare into his eyes and at that moment she knew that her change of heart would make her happy forever! ~The End~ |
