Title: Purple, Part 1
Story: Brian Michael Bendis
Art: Michael Gaydos

Summary: Despite a pitch by Matt Murdock, Jessica Jones turns down a case working with Ka-Zar to find his missing dabretooth Zabu because she doesn't want to travel to the Savage Land and deal with dinosaurs and the jungle.

She returns to her office to find a message from a woman named Kim Rourke, asking for her help regarding Zebediah Killgrave, the Purple Man. Jessica has had a bad past with him, and gets ill just at the mention of his name.

Jessica goes to Avengers Mansion to confront her old friend Carol Danvers, who recommended her to Kim Rourke. Jessica is furious that Carol would get her involved in this, given her history with Purple Man. Carol assures her that she didn't do it to cause her pain, but because she thinks that Jessica needs to confront these issues so that she can heal and move on. Jessica angrily retorts that she needs Carol to stop telling her what she needs, and storms off.

Jessica's boyfriend, Scott Lang (aka Ant-Man) sees Jessica and tries to talk to her, but Jessica wants to be alone. Carol tries to convince Scott to let her go and calm down, but he goes after her anyway. Scott tries to talk to her about the Killgrave incident, but she is too upset to talk about it and flies away, telling him to respect her boundaries.

Eventually, Jessica does end up going to see Rourke, and finds that she represents a large group of people who are related to victims of the Purple Man. All of them have friends or family members who died as a result of his mind control manipulations. Killgrave has admitted to many of the murders he committed, but he refuses to admit to killing the loved ones of these people. They want to hire Jessica to find evidence that he was responsible, so that they can have some peace. Jessica agrees to take the case.

Comments: This issue kicks off a storyline that will explore Jessica's troubled superheroing career as "Jewel", and will likely feature Carol in flashbacks to her old Ms. Marvel days, when she and Jessica first became friends.
