Title: Purple, Part 2
Story: Brian Michael Bendis
Art: Michael Gaydos & Mark Bagley
Summary: Jessica Jones finally tells Luke Cage the story of what happened between her and the Purple Man. During her superhero days as Jewel, Jessica encountered the Purple Man, fell under his control and was kept as his slave for eight months! Although he did not force her to have sex with him, he did make her fall in love with him and psychologically tortured her by making her watch him as he seduced other women. He went so far as to make her beg him for his love and for him to "make love" to her.
Eventually, Kilgrave got tired of playing with Jessica and sent her out on a mission to kill Daredevil and any other hero she found along the way. Jewel took off for Avengers Mansion and though the Purple Man's pheromones slowly started to work their way out of her system, it was not fast enough. She arrived at Avengers Mansion just as the Avengers were returning from a mission with the Defenders. Jessica saw the Scarlet Witch and in her confused state, mistakes her for Daredevil. Jewel swooped in and attacked, nearly taking Wanda's head off!
At this point, Jessica finally snapped free of the Purple Man's control--but it was too late. She is surrounded by an extremely angry Vision, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Dr. Strange, Hulk, Namor, Silver Surfer, Valkerie, and Ms. Marvel! Fearing that the heroes would not believe her story of being mind controlled but was now free, Jewel flew off and tried to escape. However, she did not get far before Thor caught her, and threw his hammer directly at her!
Comments: Carol only has a small, non-speaking role in this issue, during the Bagley-drawn flashbacks to her time with the Avengers as Ms. Marvel. This story also shows that Jessica and Carol have even more in common. Both women were victims of mind control, and forced to fall in love with men they hated. Based on my research, I'd guess that this flashback occured in the early months of Carol's time with the Avengers circa Avengers Vol. 1 #189.
