Summary: The Avengers (and Silverclaw) fly to Peliali's mountain to find the fiery volcano goddess under attack by Kulan Gath's priests! Lupe is initially shocked at finally seeing her mother, but she and the Avengers don't have time to process the scene before due to an attack by Gath's hawkriders. The team divides to fend off the attack as well as to try to aid Peliali. Just as they reach her however, she and her attackers disappear.
The team once again splits their forces to deal with two pressing matters; investigating Kulan Gath's city and dealing with the appraoching Costa Verdan army! Iron Man & the Wasp deal with the armywhile the remaining heroes head into the city. The Scarlet Witch alters some of Iron Man's computer chips in order to shield the team from the transformative spell that affects Silverclaw's hometown. The group of Avengers do not suspect that they are being followed by the mysterious man in the shadows.
While the Wasp & Shellhead convince the Costa Verdan army not to enter the city, the others explore the transformed village. They quickly realize that Kulan Gath's spell is imperfect when they notice several remnants of the modern world. The group enters a tavern, which makes Warbird particularly on edge given her recent drinking problems. She focusses instead on Triathlon and his endless string of gripes and quips directed against the Avengers. Carol pulls the novice hero aside and gives him an eye-opening and stern talking to. She let's him know that he has a choice here: to continue to harass the team and make it crystal clear that he wants no part of them or to get over himself and give the team a chance. Warbird emphasizes that while the team isn't perfect, that they're good people and a group that she is proud to be a part of! This gives Triathlon some serious food for thought!
Just as the team is formulating a plan for infiltrating Kulan Gath's city, a barroom brawl breaks out! The villagers are then transformed into demons by a sorcerous spell and they manage to subdue the assembled heroes. Meanwhile in his tower, Kulan Gath lords it over the captive Peliali and explains to her his master plan.Having realized his own frustrations with the modern world, the aged wizard intends to sacrifice the volcano goddess in order to convince his evil gods that he is worthy of ascending to their plane of existence!
Comments: It was great seeing Carol step up and call Triathlon on his recent attitude and bitterness towards the Avengers. The scene included a nice mention of Carol's own past problems with the team. It was also mentioned that Carol has been sober for four months now!
