Writing Your Own Computer programs?

ICOM uses a system of 'cloning' the configuration of a radio. Cloning sets up the operational parameters of a radio (frequencies, modes, scanning rates etc) either by copying them from another radio of the same type (cloning) or by using software to send them to the radio.

The document "How ICOM Cloning Works" (670Kb) uses the IC-R2 handheld as an example. The cloning protocol is described, and hardware descriptions are given. The memory layout of the IC-R2 is also described.

A description of the hardware needed. You need to understand the basic hardware structure to successfully write a computer program.

ICOM's own manual Icom Communication Interface - V : Reference Manual (2.76Mb) describes the protocol used.

Some VB6 Programs With Sourcecode.

A simple control program (27Kb) with sourcecode. This allows you to send commands to any CIV enabled radio, and to see the responses from the radio.

ICOM Cloning Software with Visual Basic 6 Source Code (40Kb) This gives a working program which will 'clone' the IC-R2 and IC-R10 (and probably any other ICOM radio). The program requires a 32 bit Microsoft Windows operating system. It will write an ICOM style .ICF file to disk. Sourcecode is provided so that you can see how it works.

A program for controlling the IC-R10(41 Kb). Program and source code. Your machine must already have the VB6 runtime and controls. Remember - this will only work on a 32 bit operating system.

Other Sites

Dave AA6YQ maintains another site with information, including some Visual Basic code fragments.

For hardcore programmers there is always the Debian Linux ICOM Source Code (93kb) written in the "C" Language. There is also the Hamlib development project at Sourceforge.

Ekki Plicht maintains a good site with lots of information about ICOM CI-V protocols. He has written some software CIV Test (187kb) which transmits ICOM codes to a radio, and shows the responses from the radio.

Useful Downloads

If you want your program to have an LED display then Microsoft's LED Control. or this other LED Control might be useful.

Microsoft's dial control provides a rotating radio dial knob.

And a a fixed pitch font with slashed zero's can be useful.
