The story of Fruits Basket is about a young girl named Toru, whose mother was killed in a car accident on her way to work. Toru was going to live with her grandfather but her aunt's family decided to move in. So instead, Toru lives in a little tent, until one of her popular boy classmates, Yuki, and his cousin Shigure, find out about it. He and Shigure invite her to stay with them until she is able to live with her grandfather. She tries to refuse for fear she will make them feel uncomfortable but is forced to when her tent is destroyed by a mudslide and everything she owns is buried under dirt. While living at the house, Toru is introduced to other family members such as Kyo. She begins to think they are just another normal family until she finds out about the Sohma family secret when she accidently embraces Kyo, Yuki and Shigure. Which is if one of the Sohma bloodline is hugged by a member of the opposite gender, he or she will change into an animal of the Jyunishi legend. Animals like: Yuki turns into a rat, Kyo an orange cat, Shigure a dog, Hatshuharu into a cow, ect. Kyo is special in a way, he changes into the cat, in the story of Jyunishi, the legend says that there was going to be a party held up on a mountain and all the animals were invited to join, the cat had a very important part to play at the party but the he was tricked by the rat and he took the cat's position for himself. So for that reason in both animal and human form Yuki and Kyo despise each other. But throughout Toru's stay in the Sohma household she seems to bring everyone a little closer together, including Yuki and Kyo. And from there the story develops...
