I need to replace the crank on my swing bike since the threads have stripped where it goes through the frame. Does anyone knoe if the crank is special for the swing bike or if I can just replace it with a generic crank. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kurt Makoske Long Island Green Swing bike

Hi,folks i haven't visited this site for a long time. It is great to see so many people getting into the swing bike craze. I am thinking of selling my green bike, it can be seen on the home page of this site under the name of Jim West of Loomis Ca. Th bik has not been modified since the pictures were taken other than a set of green sparkle grips from Schwinn, and they look very cool on it,much better than the old stock BMX grips even though they are not original. Selling price is 650.00 you pay shipping. F el free to write with any questions and have a great new year.

Hey fello freaks of the swing bike nation! I am looking for a yellow cateye 250 wheel reflector for the front wheel of my swing bike. I have an extra rear wheel red 250 I will trade or I will make an offer on a yellow one. Also has anyone tried or sucessufully make copys of the swing bike decals I have found a great match to cut out for the fork arrows, but the swing bike decals are much more complex then they seem, and I havnt found anybody that can make an exact copy. If anybody out there knows of an NOS stockpile, or someone who has made go d replicas let me know. I am trying to get some made right now, but it is difficult to find someone who can make exact copys and I have to come up with the $$$ for a small run of thirty or so, probably several hundred dollars.

Can you think of an thing else that old that you can still take out of a box brand new? If you look long enough you will find a deal, but for me ,it was great to have a second chance to have a brand new one after all this time. You will never see my two for sale, and I will k ep looking for more.Well enjoy and mabe someday we'll pass each other swingin along the trail! A few of you have contacted me concerning decals. I have NOS versions of both Swing Bikes and they each have their own decals. The chainguard model has one decal that wraps around the top tube and has a large SB printed on top of it. Most of you have t e non-chainguard model that requires 2 decals, one on each side of the top tube. I'll be happy to photograph either one for anyone trying to reproduce the decal. I am also interested in a set when they are done for my chrome Swing Bike.

I also have a NOS swing bike, and another one used but in excellent condition. I understand that some people are in it to make money, unlike myself who is in it for collecting, but I don't see anything wrong with wanting to know what your bike is worth. wanted to know for my own satisfaction and to know if what I paid was reasonable. I feel that my bikes are priceless. I am learning more and more about them and find them very interesting.. These bikes are the coolest!!! Have a good night fellow swinger !!

Gil & Anthony, You both have good points about Swing Bike being out price. I paid $325 for my Swing Bike it wasn't NOS, but the bike was well taken care. Most people that are not collectors buy Schwinn, Swing Bikes, Western Flyer, etc. They do it just for the money. Most of them don't car about the history of the bike, most of them only care of; how much money is going to bring. You really get tired of reading on many forum people asking for a value of there bike. All of sudden you give them a value and they will turn around and ask "well how much will you give for it". If you go below there cost they feel offended. That is why I quit giving people a value on a bike. If they ask; to make them an offer. All I say is "I'm not interested". Good luck guy, Juan

Gil - 09/07/00 16:14:54

Comments:
I agree Antony, however only resellers will sell NOS Swing Bikes. Once they are all sold (whenever that is,) Guys like me (that own some NOS myself) will not sell at any price because I bought them for collecting purposes and as a family keepsake. The best thing is to buy from the correct person and for the right price, because not all NOS Swing bikes are in the same condition. (depending of where they were kept because of water and humidity and how banged up the box got after 24 years.)

seems that some people are getting the idea that NOS swing bikes are going for$800 and up. this however does not seem to be the case. I don't know of any that have gone for anywhere near that price. You can ask for as much as you want, but asking price an selling price are almost never even close. People seem to be noticing that on Ebay there are Swingers going for big dollars. Again, this is not completely true because many people put in reserve bids for their sale item and there is an automatic bid incr ase up to the reserve bid that makes it appear that the bike is continually being bid on. There was a NOS Swing Bike that someone tryed to sale twice that I have noticed so far and it still has not sold and his reserve bid was around $700. So for those of you trying to sell keep this in mind if you are serious about selling. NOS Swingers are going for $400 to max $550/$600.

Does anyone have any info about a swing bike called a swing cycle. It also says " super trick cycle "on the bike. The back rim is like a unicycle the pedals are fastened to the hub.The seat is like the unicycle seat. But it does have the front tire and frame between, and swings like the swing bike.I was looking to find out when it was made, and any thing else about it.Any info would be appreciated.THanks Chip.

Dean regarding the rarest colors for the swing bike. I would have to say blue, only because I never saw a blue one back in the 70's or 80's. I remember a friend of mine had a yellow one in Puerto Rico in 1976-77, then when I moved to Miami I saw a guy ridding a green one two blocks from my house (around 1978-80). It wasn't until last year that I saw an orange one at my nearest bike shop 10 blo ks from my house (the owner has a collection of a few old bikes.) He told me that he just bought the frame, put some orange tires on it put it together with used parts and has it on display, using it only at carnivals along with his other old bikes. I thi k in reality the rarest must be solely based on the least color made at the time the company made them. My experience with not seing the blue one before (until I bought one last year) deals with demographics only, but is what I remember.

Joel, does your bike have the chainguard? I have 2 NOS chainguard models that have a star sprocket like you would see on a Sting Ray. Both of the bikes that I have seen with this solid type of sprocket have been without a chainguard. Is it me or does t e blue swinger on Ebay look like a different shade of blue?

FYI: The Orange SB on Ebay is the chainguard model. That's why the chainring is different. Mine has the same one.

FOUR 1976 NOS SWING BIKES FOR SALE!!!!!! These Swing bikes are 100% intact in original boxes. I'm an old bicycle Dealer and have one "original" swing bike in each color that was ever made still new in the original Swing Bike "UTAH" boxes since the 1970's! !! I have 1-Blue,1-Orange,1-Green,1-Yellow. Bikes are just like you got them direct from the SWING factory in the 70's. These four bikes have been in a heat controlled room on wooden floor to protect boxes from moisture. Nothing molested. You can't get an better than this! TRUE ORIGINAL NOS IN EVERY COLOR THAT NEVER SEEN THE LIGHT OF DAY SINCE THE mid-1970's!!!!!!! Email or Call Robert at WES BMX INC. at 607-754-7311 for pricing. Serious inquirys only. Willing to deal if you buy all four! I can ship UPS a d it will be tracked. All Bikes will be "double Boxed" to protect original swing bike box and never put together SWING bike for collectors. This is a rare opportunity. I cannot guarantee if Swing Bike owners manuals are in boxes as I have never opened th Swing bike box. I remember in the 70's many of these bikes didn't come with manuals for some reason, but thats a small thing. These bikes are extremely rare and unique...I "rarely" ever see true NOS "new" ones that have never been assembled like these. As embled any one of these would win shows as they are #10 or possibly put or sold to a bike museum someday. Good opportunity as OEM parts are impossible to get for these and the are 100% complete "factory fresh" and NEVER taken out of original boxes!

I just picked up a green chainguard model 2 weeks ago. It's a blast. (I wish my mountain bike would do this). It was missing the brake, F fender, and reflectors. R fender, chainguard, sissy bar, and wheels were pretty rusty. Decent paint. I was able to ma e a rear fender from an offbrand 20" and some tin snips. Put a Stingray front on for now but I think I can do better. The wheels and handlebars are pretty common ones and I found a nearly identical set. Here's the best part...I parted out an old offbrand 3 speed a while back that someone abandoned on my doorstep. The reflectors and pedals were identical to the SB parts and the chainguard is a 26" version of the same (snip, snip). The front brake LOOKS the same too and seems to fit. (COULD SOMEONE GIVE ME A DISCRIPTION OF CORRECT ONE ??) If you are missing these parts, look around in the thrift stores...you might get lucky. So I still need the wheel reflectors (ARE THESE CATEYE TOO ???) and sissy bar to make it look complete. Would appreciate any assistance. I would like to find another one (even just a frameset) too. THANKS FOR THE GREAT WEBSITE BOB !

I WOULD LOVE TO TRADE IN ONE OF MY SWING BIKES FOR ONE, BUT THE PRICE FOR ONE IS 40,000 EURO, WHICH SPELLS SOMETHING LIKE 37,000 U.S. DOLLARS. A BIT OF A HIGH PRICE TAG. T EY WILL MAKE 50 OF THEM FOR THIS SUMMER OF 2000 TO BE SOLD. IF ANYONE IS CRAZY ENOUGH TO FORK OUT THAT KIND OF CASH FOR A COMMUTER (NO MATTER HOW GOOD IT LOOKS AND RUNS) IT IS JUST UNDER WHAT A DODGE "PROWLER" COSTS. AND A LOT HIGHER THAN WHAT A VOLKWAGEN "BUG" COSTS. YOU DECIDE.........?? I DIDN'T THINK SO. .......BOB, REGARDS, GIL.

Hi everyone! It's been a while since I wrote a line. Anyway, talk about being at the right place at the right time. While I was ridding my used blue swinger at Miami Beach this past weekend, someone aproaches me and says: Hey, you are ridding the Donny & arie swing bikes.... "I said yes, If you would like more info on how to get one you can find info on the Swing Bike web page". He simply said, "no.., it's ok I have a few" and smiled continuing to say: I'm the inventor of the new version" I quickly said " 've read about you on the web page and seen pics of the 26" cruser".. We spoke for a few minutes talking about bikes and related subjects. It was Matthew Lapides (inventor of the Joyride Swing Bike) He was headed to the beach area to enjoy the sun with a iew of a kite show that was being shown. Nice down to earth guy.

According to Kenton Lewis, the man who bought the patentent after the project went bankrupt, there were close to 40,000 bikes made. I believe all were made in 1976. I don't have exact numbers yet on the production of the chainguard model but these were he earlier of the two models. The change from the chainguard to the standard sprocket was due to the popularity of motocross bikes and the BMX craze that was about to take over.

I received this letter from one of the original Swing Bike inventors. Dear Dean, Thank you for your letter for info on the Swing Bike. I do not mean to disapoint you but I am so busy that to do you justice I am going to acknowledge your letter of reques and ask for a moment of patience. I do have material and pictures you would be interested in, that I need to locate and put a packet together for you. The three of us who initiated the SB are still alive and keep in touch on a near daily basis. The actua inventor is Ralph Belden who lives right near me, he is the genius of the final design after a 26" prototype we rode for the first time in 1969. The major effort for the engineering design and obtaining patents was Mr. Brasseur of Spokane Wa. His effort ade it happen. It was a major event in our loves. The initial acceptance at the toy shows indicated quite firmly that we were going to become millonaires. For three guys from the pine tree covered mountains of Montana we were ecstatic. I might also have b en maive. I made the contacts with what turned out to be unfortunatly, major promoters who eventually steered the entire project into bankruptcy and there it sat tied up for nearly the duration of the patent. There is much to the story of course of which will not belabor you with right now but as soon as I can get everything together I will send it to you. Mr. Brasseur has boxes of the pertinat criteria that exist. The design required extensive engineering in order to stand the pedal loads that, say, a 2 0lb. man could exert. He being an aircraft engineer was able to intricately design the stress loads so that it would stay together but retain the design that Ralph intended. All in the story to come. Ok now I'm excited. I can't wait to hear the rest of the story. I'll keep you posted.

From a post to the Schwinn forum (not mine): The Swing Bike is in excellent shape. To the best of my knowledge it is all original except for the seat. I know you have heard the little old lady story, in this case it is the same story but with a little old man. He didn't know that the rear end swu g so he never unlatched it. He did however have the seat recovered with additional cushion so it is no longer the original seat cover. However, the rest of the bike is beautiful with a full chrome chainguard and yellow paint. The price is $600.00 plus reight. Thank you for your interest. Jay Johnson (360) 988-2145 yoderdeb@aol.com

Hey Bob, can you find out from the owners son why there were 2 different models. I have both and they both left the factory in 1976.

Yes some of the Swing parts maybe be generic but Swing connoisseur like me wants purity. After having a few bad ones.Like could I ever find a Swing fork to replace my bad bent one. A sears musclebike fork won't work. streached spring; gulp, bungeee cord t me. I wouldn't dare replace my bruised bars with Wald look alike or something that has the wrong bend. I get more enjoyment buying a good one then working 8 months trying to have a good rider. Dean, Your blue one on ebay is the best one I've seen in a lon time. Someone will surely enjoy that blue one. THIS IS A GREAT WEBSITE. Props to the webster dude for all his hard work.

No one is going to make much selling beat up swingers. The parts that make up a Swing Bike are generic to begin with, so put the bike together and ride it. Once all of the Swing Bikes are in collectors hands the prices will go up. If you look back at a l of the transactions that have occured on this page over the last 5 years you will see that the people selling NOS swingers are not collectors. These are guys that found them in a garage, basement or thrift shop and are happy to get a couple hundred buc s for them. In the long run they are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them. As much as I love these bikes, I would not pay what people are paying for krates. Besides the fun is in riding them not looking at them.

I just purchased my first swing bike for $40 at a junk store. It is orange and I think I need a lot of help! Can anyone suggest a book for reference? In reviewing everyone's comments, maybe I should just put it on ebay and fund a new BMX freestyle for m son who had one stolen!

I see good to sweet condion Swing Bikes on eBay that go for only $300-$400 and then I see rusty BEAT Garbage Swing bikes that are impossible to restore go with wrong parts for $150-$300 on eBay. This does not make any sense from a bike collector prospecti e. A beat one should be worth $50-$125 #7-8 condition $400-$900 and new or NOS 1,200-$2,000. How is somebody going to find parts besides a rear cheater slick for a JUNK $200 Swing bike??? These bidders amaze me. A nice Schwinn restored Krate goes for about $1,000 and a NOS one in unopened box like $7,500. Same with other bikes..CONDITION MEANS AL T. If I find a few totally beat Swingers in the garbage or at a garage sale for $15 I'll sell them on auction to a sucker. If I find a new one from the mid-70's or a near mint one I want BIG BUCKS till they hit $1,500-$2,000 each;again, Where are they going o find original parts for the junkers???? There is none !!!!!!!!!! Heck if collectors couldn't buy oem,nos or repop parts for Schwinns. 100% original Schwinn bikes would even go for more!! like 3x more. It happened to the Schwinns, then the Raleigh Choppers and now the Sears Screamers..Swing Bikes in intact and good condition will be next to skyrocket. So fellas hang on to your good swingers and let the fools buy the junk!

BTW, I've added a link on the main page to Mike Watson's new homegrown Swing Bike -- it's enough to make Chunk 66 proud. And there are a few new bikes in the Registry. Check them out!

There are 2 different types of decals. We have all seen the common type with one decal on each side of the top tube, but on the rare chainguard model the decal is quite different. As a matter of fact, the whole bike is different. The decal is one piece hat raps around the top tube. I now have both models, both are fresh out of the box.

Everything old is new again. Yahoo decided to switch back to the old GeoCities Guestbook format (which I like better as I can edit the comments and correct errors -- or add pictures if you need me to). The interim Yahoo message forum is still out there to read, but please don't post to it. Thanks!
