Edmund (Edward) Pendleton Hayth
He was a farmer and served in the Second Virginia Cavalry and also was a builder and surveyor of bridges. At one time he lived in Buchanan, Virginia. When serving in the Second Virginia Cavalry he was shot, got his foot caught in his stirrup and was dragged until he was able to pull free. The man next to him saved his life by pushing a silk handkerchief through his wound. His horse was shot out from under him during the battle at Gettysburg.
He was a builder of bridges. Stories say he would sleepwalk and would walk on the bridge trestles. The boys would follow hime to make sure he was OK. They were afraid to wake him as they thought he would fall off.
He was married by Reverend Peter Schickel, a Lutheran minister. When he married, he was a carpenter. His first name has been spelled Edmund, Edmond, and Edward.
He is buried in Copps Cemetery, Springwood, Virginia.
