Well,
it's official... Garbage was announced on 3rd August as being the group
who will do the theme to The World Is Not Enough. There was much
speculation as to who would land the job, but the talk of Garbage seemed
to persist longer than any other rumour, and seemed to have a certain ring
of truth about it.
It
is understood that the song has already been recorded, and is, according
to Don Black (speaking to DotMusic) "quite ballady and dramatic, but feels
contemporary". In a statement on the TWINE official site, Michael Wilson
and Barbara Broccoli said they believed "the collaboration between David
Arnold, Don Black and Garbage will make this one of the most memorable
of Bond songs". It is not known what form the song will take or what the
name of the song is, although "The World Is Not Enough" would be a pretty
good guess.
The
song was written by composer David Arnold
and lyricist Don Black (Thunderball), and is due for release in November,
around the time the film is released.
Garbage
to sing title theme? (24/6/99)
 |
Garbage
are well on their way to signing a deal with Eon for performing the title
theme - and perhaps more. Composer David Arnold
is due to make an official announcement to the press sometime next week,
according to our source at Eon.
All
the artists previously thought to be doing the theme, including Texas’
Sharleen Spiteri, Jamiroquai, Robbie Williams and Mel C, have reportedly
been "rejected".
The
controversial signing of Garbage for the theme tune will be the talk of
the industry and a lively point of discussion among fans - but there's
no question that Shirley Manson (vocals and guitars) has a voice that is
suitably seductive for the demands of the job.

An
article also appeared in dotmusic today, entitled "Garbage tipped for Bond
theme tune". It explains that lawyers are on the set, and are preparing
to sign the deal any day now. The article goes on to say that the song,
which has already been written, "is in the style of John Barry" and will
please David Arnold, who is striving for a balance between "artistic credibility
with the wish for an international name to boost [the film's] audience."
One
source, who has heard a demo of the song, said "Everyone is up for it.
These things just take some sorting out." Garbage, and their UK label Mushroom
Records however, declined to comment.

April
- There has still been no official announcement of the artist signed to
croon the title, and fans have been eagerly speculating who would do the
job best. Current favourites include Shirley Bassey (who has already done
three Bond songs), Jamiroquai, and Robbie Williams, who is this site's
favourite contender for the job.
|
Robbie
Williams' vocal style would be great for a Bond film- just listen to the
wonderful Millennium (which borrowed heavily from 1967's You
Only Live Twice Theme (Williams consulted John Barry, the composer
of the original music, who agreed to him using it.) Robbie has hinted at
his enthusiasm to do the Bond theme on several occasions, and even had
Q
(Desmond Llewelyn) do a walk-on appearance in one of his performances.
Will the current controversy that surrounds him prevent him from doing
the theme for Twine? We hope not. |

Jamiroquai's
JK, who has been quoted as saying he's been approached to sing the theme,
and that he "likes the title" of the film.
|
Sporty
Spice Mel C, who has allegedly been signed to do the theme. This still
remains a rumour, however.
|
Other
bands/peformers that are slated to perform the title theme include Des
Ree, Céline Dion, Cher, and the Scottish band Texas, who have had
a stream of hits in the UK over the last few years. |

At
least we know who won't be doing the theme song!

Sunday
21st March saw an article featured in the Sunday People, claiming that
"Sporty Spice" Mel C would be vaulting her way through the credits song,
which is difficult to believe, especially since there has been no official
announcement made by an Eon Spokesperson on the matter.
Mel
C is arguably the most talented of the successful "Spice Girls", although
whether she has a suitable voice for a Bond theme is hard to say. You can
read the full article here.
The
official announcement is due to be made very soon, and you will be able
to read all about it at this site first.
