The Bible of Reuben E. Kirtley is dated 1839. This list appears in the printed Genealogy section, page 3, column 2. At the head of the column appears the words Births of Slaves. The word BIRTHS. is printed and the rest written by hand. Two small horizontal lines appear between each name. There are thirteen births listed on the page, but one, George Washington, son of Clarissa, is marked through, which probably indicates he died shortly after birth. Clarissa did have another George about a year and a half later.

     The original documents from which this was taken were copies belonging to Mrs. Elizabeth Kirtley, a Boone County historian and genealogist. The records from this Bible were transcribed by Mrs. Kirtley; I disagreed with several of her readings, and made those changes here. I also included the marked through name, which I feel is important. Everyone, born, still-born, or unborn, is a human, and everyone counts! — Editor.
