A Slave Transaction: Eliza, 13 Feb 1825

Note: William Routt was a lawyer from Campbell County. This sale was became part of a larger land transaction recorded in Boone County Deed Book M, page 101. In return for the black girl Eliza Maj. Scott sold Benjamin the land in Union Kentucky that he had bought at a Sheriff's sale.


Received 8th. Feby. 1827. of Jacob Fowler a receipt signed by William Routt as follows: Received 13th. February 1825. of Chasteen Scott by the hands of Benjamin D. Fowler a negro Girl Eliza at the price of Six hundred dollars in Commonwealth paper which is to be credited on account of the land purchased b Chasteen Scott & transferred to me which I am to transfer to said Benjamin D. Fowler agreeable to transfer the ballance (sic) of the Six hundred dollars after deducting the amount due me from said Scott to be applied to the credit of Jacob Fowler on accounty of services rendered to him, in my profession as a lawyer.
