surf casting

surf castinghe battery question : not to have a nasty surprise, test the real duration of your lamps. It is too unpleasant to be obliged to repack all in the dark and to step on the knees every 15 feet when going back to the car because you forgot a spare bulb or a spare set of batteries. An experienced man...

Putting appart the preceeding details, here are some tips that could help you to get closer of the fish..

The lights, head ones or others, should be handled with care. I would better say, without becoming a Robinson Crusoe, trying to "read" your environnement in the dark is not that uncomfortable, and, considering the fish comes close to the beach, it is not necessary to scare it with a moving light it's not used to at this place.

I think effectively that playing the lighthouse with your head light and "painting" the water surface is not the better method to attract a suspicious fish when it get close to the beach. If a fixed light at the surface of the water (lamparo) can attract some gregarious skills or shrimps or other small fry; I don't believe that a bass can get close to a light ray coming from the middle of it's dark beach.

The tip lights

surf castinghese small lights with batteries replace advantageously the chimical lights. The tip lights are set in place starting FROM THE BOTTOM END in a plastic rail attached on the tip by ligatures. My expérience is that the 2 batteries in a tip light last one year, and the announced duration of 120 h in continuous is correct. Even if small, these tip lights are efficient. However, take care to remove them from the tip before casting to avoid to unbalance the tip and to avoid the loop around, otherwise they will follow your lead in a non desired midnight sink. The red color is the more visible and the more economic for the batteries of course, but it is a little eyestraining to whom is looking at it a long time, if you find green ones (non colored), that's a good choice.

Remember,

  • Be discreet, switch on your head light only if necessary.
  • Turn your back to the water side before you set on a new rig or before you hook on a bait.
  • Put a screen between your ground lamp and the water (your fishing bag for example).

Choosing a head lamp

surf castingithin the numberous types available on the market, reject those which batteries are on the front side because 4 batteries R6 type + the holding box create such an unbalanced weight, that you'll renounce to wear this head light, plus : you'll have to tighten the strap stronger not to see the whole system slipping beyond your nose.

As well, you'll reject the types using old flat 4.5V batteries, these becoming expensive on the duration.

"The" good type should be light, sealed, with 4 x R6 batteries located on the back of the head to balance the front part. I'm using the LARGO type; I changed the bulb into a 3.7V-0.3A and I replaced 1 x R6 battery by a stainless steel spool piece; with this system you get a duration of 1.2A / 0.3 = 4 hours with a sufficient power.

Some are using batteries from scale models, to me, 3 rechargeable batteries NiMH R6 1.2V - 1200mA ou 1300mA are fully sufficient.

On the other hand, if you keep the 4.8V-0.75A bulb et 4 x R6 batteries, the duration will be reduced to 1.2A / 0.75 = 1h35min. (not sufficient for a fishing session). More, you "run" with a 4 batteries set instead of 3.
