The Type

hen we speak about type, we immediately differentiate the rods for multipliers from those for fixed spools reels.

The rods for multipliers
We find few rods of this type in the French stores, but you will notice them with the first glance : the guide rings have diameters definitely smaller and are also more numerous (thus set more closer). Generally 8 or 9 rings on the tip and sometimes 1 on the heel.
Another notorious difference is the setting up of the reel, here you deal with rings (more or less sophisticated) which is based on the same principle as the piping collars. Choose rubber wrapped ones not to cut your fingers.

It should be known that a multiplier can be set up in high position or low position. The most usually used one for fishing is the high position. The setting up at the bottom of the rod for fishing forces to have a small special rod extension to be able to install the rod in its support for fishing action, in order to give off the reel of the cup support and then for winding in with the rod under the arm.

Pay attention if you'll use the mail order, indeed certain rods manufacturers sell only the "blanks" (non equipped sections (without rings, nor decorations...) as well as an indicative note with assembly describing the diameters of the guide rings to be used and their pitch along the strands: it is less expensive.
For a first purchase I would not recommend this solution rather reserved for people who are used to assemble. It is however feasible but you need (I think) the help of a person having already passed by this step before. To begin, thus choose a finished rod, that will remove you from the anguish of bungling a rod.

The rods for fixed spool reels
The larger size of the guide rings and their smaller number let us think that the manufacturers wanted to limit the friction of the line at the outlet of the reel. Considering their significant size, we often find the 1st or the 2 first foldable guide rings to limit the overall dimensions and the breakage during transport.

Materials

igh module materials or not, carbon fiber is now the base for all the rods. And the cross rolling up reinforce the inertia of the sections.
Certain 3 section rods have the defect of their material : a tip end which is too stiff makes them lose sensitivity to the bites and sometimes make them very sensitive to the transverse wind. Check this point well : if the rod must be stiff on the 2 thirds of its length; the tip itself, must be flexible.

The great majority of the 2 element rods have a carbon fiber heel which is filament rolled up, however that the higher 2 thirds of the tip are made up to some extent of fiber glass. What gets a very great rigidity to them in the low part, necessary to the modern casts. While the tip top part is very flexible for bite detection but also takes part in the damping of the end of the gesture of casting (to avoid the very unpleasant "whipped" of certain rods).

Carbon allowed to decrease notably the diameters, which authorized "small hands" to enclose easily the heels of the rods, (and there, I think particularly to the women that one finds with pleasure more and more often fishing by the shores). The reduction in the diameters also impacted the tips, and it is specially on this part that the modification is the most visible; the wind load is reduced as much.

By reducing the diameter of the tips, one had to reduce the weight of the guide rings, if not : one was likely to unbalance the rods. The very large variety of types and materials of rings make room to very subjective judgement of it. Know however that there are VERY great differences in strength for 2 guide rings which seem identical, I made the bitter experiment of it and that led me to think that the full price of certain recognized marks appears justified to me. Take that point into account.

Telescopic rods

ven if many "summer" fishermen use telescopic rods for surfcasting : avoid this more fragile hardware which is not adapted for strong casts and which will support sand with difficulty. If you tried out a wind which raises a dry sand on 1.5 m height along the beach, you will remember what to rinse the reels means. It is the same for the couplings, I do not tell you about washing with large water to remove the last sand particles from the interior of a telescopic rod. It is true that some anglers don't worry about sand and they are the same ones which poses their rods flat on the ground just to make a knot and which one intends to swear just after the unlucky "crac" that makes their rod under the boot of a fishing buddy. Consider you are lucky if it is not a car door quickly "slammed" on a tip ! But this is another story..

Rods with interior line

did not try out the rods with interior line. Seeing them, they seem of good design and appear tempting and smooth without these rings which, in the final analysis, give rather in dissymmetry. Nevertheless, 2 questions : does one have to remake the loop at the end of the shock leader before each fishing party ? Why aren't they more used on the shores ?
