AUSTIN / GURLEY
My ancestor is John C AUSTIN. He married Mary Ann GURLEY in Coweta County, GA on January 13, 1829. He was born around 1810 in SC. He is found in the 1840 and 1850 census's (sp?) in Paulding county GA. I have been trying to find information on his father for 2 years now without success. Family history suggests that his name was John also. It seems that a lad of 19 or younger would have had his father around close by but that is just a guess. Would really appreciate any information you might come across about this man and his forebears. I recently got e-mail from someone who remembers that probate records of Laurens county SC contained references to some AUSTIN children whose father had died. Could this be the man I am looking for? Searching for information on the POWELL, WILLARD, BAILEY & HILL names in Laurens Co., SC. Especially looking for leads on my G-G-Grandparents WILLIAM POWELL & MARTHA WILLARD. Martha was the dau. of JAMES WILLARD & WINNEFRED HILL & the name of one of her brothers (Martha's) is believed to be WILLIAM DALTON WILLARD. Also believe that one of her brother-in-laws was a S. TURNER BAILEY. A Laurens Co. researcher gave me the following information: "...based on the census entries, maps, etc. I found Wm Powell, 39, Martha, 29, James f, 6, and other Powells on page 249 of the 1850 census. According to my analysis, they lived on the Enoree River side of Rehoboth Church in Scuffletown Township." I'd also like to know the modern day location of SCUFFLETOWN township if any one knows. I have them listed in the 1850 Laurens Co. & in 1860 Union Co. census. Most all my family records mention Cross Keys as well as Cross Anchor, SC. However in my records on one of the son's of William & Martha, William Hill Powell, he stated to his yankee captives after Sharpsburg that he was from "Lawrence" (Laurens), SC. Since the boundaries of several counties border each other I am placing queries for all these adjoining counties. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Larry J. Powell / 13295 80th Lane N. / W. KNIGHT / BOLT
I am seeking information on the family of my 3G Grandmother, Martha Katura (Kitura) Knight (1/25/1835-4/7/1911). It appears that she is the daughter of Silas Knight (b. ca 1804-1805). Silas was a Methodist minister. His wife was listed as Polly (44) in the 1850 Laurens Census and Sarah (54) in the 1860 Census. In 1850 Silas and Polly's children were: Robert (20), Martha (15), Silas S.(11), Polly S.(11), Caroline (8), Nancy M. (5), Milton (3), Walter S. (1). In the 1860 census there is one more child a 9 year-old male T.S.E. and Silas the younger, profession physician, is living at home with his wife P.J. (19) and their 6 month-old son, Laurens. Also still at home are: Nancy (16), Milton (13), and Walter (11).Does anyone have information on the ancestors or descendants of Silas Knight and the family name of his wife Polly/Sarah? Their daughter Martha (my 3g grandmother) married Wiley Bolt (1/12/1827-8/3/1879). (Address) 4218 Cloudview Dr. S., Salem, OR 97302 Nov. 22,1998 |

GREY
I am Julia Gray Stepp my GGgrandfather Milford Gray was born on April 03, 1816, my father Melvin Gray was told by his Aunt Hattie Gray Boyd that Milford Gray came across the Toccoa area before 1840 (he married Sarah A. Pettyjohn of Hall Co., GA). And Hattie also told my father that Milford Gray was born in Laurens Co., SC. I do know that there were Gray's in Laurens but I am having a hard time finding Milfords father - I have ideas that Isaac Gray is related maybe a grandfather, and maybe Abraham Gray is his father, in Isaac Gray's Will there is a name that might be miss read (Madison Gray, listed as a grand son). I am unable to get to S.C. to look at any documents, I would really appreciate if some one would check out Isaac Gray's Will to see if Milford is listed. Milford named is first son Perry Pulusky Gray which there was a Pulusky Gray listed in Isaac Gray's Will and Milford named a daughter Mary Albertina and there is a name either Albetina or Albertina or Albelina on Isaac Gray's Will and Milford name another son Thomas Parks Gray which it is thought that Abraham Gray married Mary Park(s). I have also studied the John Gray line that mar. Ayslie Hyatt or Hiat but I do not think that Milford comes from this line. I do not know of any brothers or sisters for Milford either. Please, if you know anything about the Grays from Laurens, SC - inform me. Sincerely, (address)702 Harvard Court Eustis, FL 32726 Nov. 22,1998 |

I have a copy of the Dial book written by Hastings Harrison, but I am looking for any additional information about the Dial family. I am trying to trace my GGreatgrandmother Mallie Darnald(her spelling). She is listed in the 1880 Laurens Co., SC census, Crosshill Tsp., as being 10 years old and at Thornwell Orphanage. Her Mother Kate Darnall,40,b. SC and her siblings, Lula, 12, Willie, 8, and Mattie, 7, all born in SC are listed the day before as apparently still living at home with their Mother. I have been trying to trace these people without much luck for several years. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. (Address) P O Box 894 DeQueen, AR 71832 870-642-5165 Dec. 31,1998 |

HIGGINS / MARTIN
I am tracing the Higgins (as well as Martin) families of Laurens County. I don't have much of a starting place, but maybe these folks will ring a bell. I am looking for descendants of Wash and/or Harper Higgins. I think their grandmother was Caroline ("Carrie") S. Higgins Higgins Martin. She was originally from Richland County (dau. of John OCain Higgins, my gg grandfather) and first married A. H. Higgins. Then she married a Martin (possibly George Washington Martin). Her son who might be Wash and Harper's father could have been a John S. Higgins. Wash Higgins died in 30's so I am hoping he still has descendants around the area. In addition to trying to track down the Higgins clan, I am trying to tie in the Richland County Higginses w/the Laurens group, particularly since Carrie seems to have married into that branch. Her dates are 1828-1905. Is anyone else researching this group? Glenna B. Kinard 3540 Gleneagles Ct. Lithonia, Ga. 30058 Dec. 31,1998 |
