Whew. I'll tell ya, things are
looking pretty interesting this year. We're now 2 weeks from our first
show, Sayreville on the CMBC circuit, and we're looking pretty spiffy.
The band's doing ok, a little slow but that's usual stuff, the band's just,
you know, slow : ) . However, like always, the drum line is kickin' thanks
to the herculean efforts of Joe, Jay, Bob, and Mike. Our music is exceptionally
well written, and we're making leaps and bounds from week to week. I'm
really excited about this drum line, I think we're gonna go places...I
just hope I can put my mallet where my mouth is (that's figurative speech
folks, I don't need to knock my own teeth out when I've got my fellow drummers
to do it for me on my birthday..: )
As usual, our in-house G/E and drill
genius, a man who needs no introduction, the locally famous (and in some
school districts, notorious) Paul E. Tomlin, has written some fabulous
drill for us to march. Still retaining the trademark "insane tempo" and
"constant jazz running", this year's show also addresses some of the problems
brought up by judges last year concerning lack of special visuals, tricks
and the like. It's not quite a circus yet, but you can bet you'll see some
things you hadn't expected to see when you see us in action. That's all
I'm going to say for now...after all, I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise,
now would I?

This Saturday, Clearview competed in
it's first show on the CMBC circuit, and I think I can speak for all of
us in saying we were quite happy with it. It's quite a hike, admittedly,
but it's well worth it to see some new faces. Also, the scoring system
is a little different; in TOB, you get 60 points just for showing up...And
while hauling all that equipment there is extremely tricky, somehow I don't
think it's worth more than half of the show. Also, we saw Piscataway nearly
sweep clean the entire show with the dynamic performance of their 220 member,
Group V band. In return for all this, we showed the CMBC guys how cheering
in the stands is REALLY done (isn't that right, Morris Hills? ;) Special
congratulations out to Morris Hills HS as well; you guys got the one trophy
I personally really wanted (Perc). Don't worry though...we'll be
back!
Also, CHS Marching Band is proud
to announce that Mr. and Mrs. Tomlin, our band director and his wife, our
now the proud parents (and of course, Mr. DeLoach the proud uncle) of Donna
Catherine Tomlin, born on Saturday October 4th, 1997 in the wee morning
hours, weighing in at 8 lbs. 15 oz. Congratulations!

This weekend Clearview proudly hosted
the 1997 home cavalcade, and I can safely speak for all involved when I
say it was an exciting, fun-filled, emotional and, above all, tiring experience.
Hats off to Audubon percussion; Joe had our own drum line watch from the
sideline, and you can rest assured that we were all equally amazed and
in awe. Also, a special "thanks" to Northern (those guys crazy enough to
come out here from Maryland) for the tin they presented us after the show.
Honestly, I don't know what's in it, and I probably never will, as it will
doubtlessly be consumed by the staff sooner than you can say, "Hey, what
were the scores?"

Whew.
Well, yesterday was
our belated Chapter 1 championships. After rain had turned the field into
a muddy deluge Sunday, TOB made the sound, safe decision to postpone the
competition. In the meantime the field was treated (either by TOB or W/TP
I do not know), and greatly improved. We especially were grateful for this
as we were on last, and the field had recieved quite a beating from the
many other bands on before us. However, depite that, and being besieged
by blanks and injuries throughout the season (for starters), Clearview
Marching Band clinched it's 5th consecutive Chapter 1 Championship, and
needless to say, we are proud. While low on caption awards, we did win
one caption that is very special to us, Best Woodwinds. The word is that
this is our 8th consecutive year to have won that caption, and that even
makes me proud as well, as I played bari sax my rookie year, three hard
seasons ago.
Everyone in our band has reason
to be proud, because we've all worked very hard to get where we are today;
not just this season, but for the last five years. This championship is
the victory we truly seek, but the battle is not yet over. We've one last
show to compete, and while I hold no expectations for it, as a matter of
pride I intend to go to the mountain this weekend and personally open up
a big ol' can of whoop-***. (That's for you, Mr. T)
