Following three years of
studio recording and production with the Boston-based group Format, Feuler (pronounced PHE-lair)
has completed his first solo project. Format was formed at the Berklee College of
Music in the spring of 1993. Jemon Council, then the lead singer, was informed of
Feuler’s vocal abilities by a mutual friend, and Jemon invited
Feuler to provide the vocal on a song that turned out to be Format’s first
recording. The song, entitled "Wet," was played on college radio stations
throughout the Boston area. The other members of Format, George McCallister III and
Jason Friedstein, were already accomplished pianists. The group soon recorded their first
demo, with Jemon and Feuler doing all of the vocals. The demo was well received by the
music industry, including a positive response from the legendary producer, Kenneth Gamble.
Although invited by Mr. Gamble to visit his studios in Philadelphia, Format was
forced to disband prior to that meeting.
With the instrumental support gone, Feuler decided to teach himself how to play the piano so he could place music to the lyrics of songs yet to be written. Feuler played alto saxophone in high school, so reading music was not a problem for him; however, to help alleviate the other problems that arose, Feuler solicited the help of the Berklee College of Music bookstore. Purchasing music theory and jazz improvisation books, Feuler began to search for his style of music – a style influenced by the likes of Sam Cooke, The Dells, Stevie Wonder, and his present mentor, Mr. Brian McKnight.
Soon, ideas started to take the form of well-arranged songs. First came "Warm September," a song written in Spanish, French, and English. Then came the feel-good vibe of "Set It Off," a song about mutual attraction. Finally, "Crazy Love," with a touch of the Brian McKnight remake of the original by Van Morrison. All lyrics were written by Feuler, except for the "Set It Off" rap, which was written by Opia. All of the music was written and composed by Feuler and Jean Marc Stuppard. All vocals, except the "Set It Off" rap, were performed by Feuler. Earlier this year, Feuler wrote, composed, and recorded a jingle to be used in a television commercial for the United States Coast Guard. Currently, Feuler is writing and arranging songs for his upcoming album. Having proven himself in the studio as well as in live performances, the word is soon to get out about Feuler.
