John Richard Schlesinger is born on February 16 in London, England. His parents are Dr. Bernard and Winifred Schlesinger. Dr. Bernard, a very sucessful pediatritian, provides a happy childhood for John.

1943
Serves in the English army during World War II.

1945
Enters Oxford University and joins the Oxford Dramatic Society.

1948
Makes Black Legend , his first major short.

1950
Makes his second major short, The Starfish and graduates from Oxford.

1952
Acts in Singlehanded , his first major film acting performance.

1954
Acts in The Divided Heart.

1956
His short film, Sunday in the Park , is shown at the Edinburgh Film Festival

1958-1961
Directs 24 short documentaries for the BBC-TV current events series "Tonight" and for the BBC-TV arts program "Monitor".

1961
His first documentary, Terminus , wins a Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival as well as a British Academy Award.

1962
Directs A Kind of Loving , his first feature. This film wins the grand prize at the Berlin Film Festival.

1963
Directs Billy Liar .

1965
Directs Darling which goes on to get nominated for five Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director. It also wins the New York Critics Award for Best Director.

1967
Far From the Maddening Crowd , his fifth major film, is released. It is his first film in color.

1969
The year of Midnight Cowboy . For his work on the film he wins many awards including the Oscar for best picture.

1970
For his contribution to British cinema Schlesinger is named a Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II.
