A close-up of the Titanic memorial.  It reads:

IN HONOUR OF
ALL  HEROES OF THE
MARINE ENGINE ROOM
THIS MEMORIAL
WAS ERECTED BY
INTERNATIONAL SUBSCRIPTION
MCMXVI

Notice that the memorial is pock-marked and realize this monument sat here through the Second World War.  Between 1940 and 1942, 2,596 people were killed, thousands more injured, and 11,000 homes destroyed by bombs dropped on Liverpool.  The docks all around this monument, and other docks up-and-down the Mersey, were the primary targets.  In England, only London was bombed more heavily.  Most of the war supplies and troops from the U.S. were shipped to Liverpool.   The Atlantic command headquarters was also there (and it still is- a neat underground tour now).

Here is an offsite link to a page in the National Museum's site describing the Liverpool Blitz.   Follow the "time" buttons.
