_____BRIAN

My name is Brian Erickson, and i live in Kirkwood, Missouri. I am a alto sax player and was in band class as normal last monday, December 6, 1999. Next thing we know, our principle walks in the door with a guest, so our director, jokingly, asks our principle to direct. He then said to his guest, how about you direct, you could do it better. Then our Principle proceeded to say, "this is David Sanborn..." I turned to my friend, the first chair saxophone in our symphonic band and asked,"is that really him?" we both thought they were just joking around, we didn't expect it to really be David Sanborn! she turned back to me and said, "I think it is him." My jaw dropped, but then we had to start playing a song. David left after a few minutes, and before i knew it, class was over. Well, i hussled to the office after class to see if David was still at our school. they said yes, but he was leaving from the opposite end in a few minutes. I hussled across campus, and then waited. I saw David Sanborn inside, an approached. My principle introduced me and i talked to Mr. Sanborn for 5-10 minutes. I first invited him to our Jazz band rehersal that following night, but he told me he was sorry, but he was leaving town that Monday night. I then proceeded to tell him i was 1st chair jazz band. He asked if i was a senior, and i said no, a sophomore. I told him i was first chair last year, and he was very impressed.
He told me he had not even planned to stop by the school, but that he was coming back in the spring and would like to work with me. He then asked if i was interested in becoming a performer. I told him i wasn't sure, but that i was considering it. He then wrote down his phone number in New York for me, and told me to give him a call if i had any questions about anything, reeds, moutpieces, performing life, anything, and he would "tell you[me] what I[David Sanborn] didn't know." I thanked him very much, and throughout the conversatino, had shaken hands 4 or more times.
David Sanborn was such a nice guy. He really was interested in other people, and took the time to talk with those interested. He didn't seem self-absorbed, and i must say, he was very stylish, just like a performer would be thought of like. I haven't called him yet, but plan to in the near future. Let me just say, i was thrilled for several days, and still am.
