_____CATHY

I had seen David perform several times by 1995, but in large theaters, and usually from the 20th row. So imagine how happy I was to read that he was to appear at the Blue Note Jazz Club in Greenwich Village the week of New Years Eve. A friend, and avid jazz fan, told me it would be a wonderful experience to see David at the Blue Note. The club is small, and the tables are right up against the stage! But, you have to get there early to get a good table. With this knowledge I made a reservation immediately.

The night of the show, my friends and I arrived very early. There is a very long line even for those with reservations. Once inside we were lead to a table in front of the stage. We could not believe our luck, we were going to be four feet from David Sanborn. I had brought a small camera, but unfortunately, photos were not allowed. I thought of sneaking a few shots without a flash, but I was literally in the lights of the stage and would have been seen.

At 8:00 David and the band were announced. Then there he was, walking through the club right toward me. My friend Caroline had to get up and move her chair to make room for him to climb on stage. Well, needless to say, the show was wonderful. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the evening, not only did I hear him play, I saw every move up close.

At the end of the show, David climbed down from the stage, and walked out through the audience, as everyone stood and cheered. I was in a state of shock, and I'm told with the biggest grim on my face. My friends and I started talking and laughing with others at our table, making note of everything David played and said. We especially enjoyed the comment he made regarding the song "Snakes". He said it was dedicated to all the lawyers, and Caroline and I worked for law firms.

As we were leaving the club, Caroline had to use the ladies room. We were directed to go upstairs, near the club's store and kitchen. Once upstairs, there were so many people I couldn't move, never mind find the ladies lounge. Then Caroline discovered she had dropped her gloves downstairs, and disappeared to find them. I was alone stuck in the crowd of people in a small hallway. I decided to stay put until Caroline returned.

After a while, the area cleared and a door opened at the end of the hall. A couple were exiting and saying goodnight to someone. I looked up and there was David in the doorway. He was smiling at me. I looked around, there was no one else in the hall. I wondered, would it be okay to just go in his dressing room? I walked over to him, and said "Hi, Thank you for the wonderful show". He said thanks, and offered to sign an autograph. Caught off guard, I handed him the only paper I had, a flyer the club hands out regarding the nights performance. Then I started to babble on about how talented he is, and how great is was to be seated so close, all while nervously tugging at his sleeve. I was sure I was making an idiot of my self, embarrassed, I tried to leave quickly. Then I relaxed I had a camera in my bag. So, I asked if he would pose for a photo. He posed for a few shots then asked his assistant to take one of the two of us. I thanked him again, wished him a happy new year, and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

As I returned to the stairs, I found Caroline looking worried. "Where were you?" she asked. I told her I was taking to David. She didn't belive me. "Yes," I said, "really and I got an autograph, pictures and a kiss." Just then a man passing us on the stairs said "Gee Lady, you had a lucky night."
