"I'm not a jazz musican. Not that I'm offended by the discription, but I think that the rhythmic orientation of what I do is not really jazz. I can give you other reasons why I wouldn't consider myself a jazz musican, like I don't have the command of the vocabulary that comes out of the tradition. But actually I don't know why anybody would want to call themselves anything. Thge implication is exclusionary. Now, I understand why people are so protective about the word jazz and about what they consider jazz. But I think you can go a little overboard with that. Jazz is a growing, evolving art form, and it has incorporated a lot of different things."
