My first time meeting David Sanborn was the summer of 1987 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He played on a Saturday nite at Bally's Grand Casino with Brenda Russell opening for him. On the nite before George Benson served as the headliner with an opening by Grover Washington Jr. I had made a deal with my friend Peter Bournias that if he would get the rooms in AC I would take care of the tickets. I purchased tickets for both night's concerts, as Pete was a huge Benson fan and I a big Sanborn fan. In effort to tease me, Pete was very impressed with Grover Washington Jr., as well he should be, but to quote Pete," that little skinny white boy better come out and blow his butt off on that horn." I was so confident of David's abilities that I told Pete if he liked Grover BETTER than David, I would pay for the rooms as well. Needless to say, I didn't have to pay for the rooms! The clincher was when we went backstage to meet David as Pete didn't know I was close and personal friends with David's sister Barbara. Not only did we go backstage, we went on his tour bus,met and had pictures taken with everyone in the band, and received tickets and passes for his show in Baltimore acouple of nites later! Obviously, my first experience of meeting David was a memorable one and just the beginning of many trips to Sanborn concerts and trips backstage to meet and greet the band. I have seen at least one of his shows every year since that initial meeting. More stories to be told upon request!
