_____SHEILA

I actually have a couple of good David Sanborn concert experiences that I would like to share. The first being my first concert. In April or May of 1986, I took all of my siblings who lived in Chicago to the concert which was at the Auditorium Theater. David was playing with Stanley Clarke. Smile is always the show stopper and Hiram Bullock was in rare form. The crowd went wild for David, which is probably how he got the inspiration for the Chicago Song which was released the next year.

My second David Sanborn concert was the summer of 1987. I was in New York for the first time, and on my first night in the big-apple we saw a poster stating that David was in concert at an outdoor concert place on the Hudson Bay. The good news for me was that seating was on a first come basis. I was not able to get seating in the middle but I had the second row on the left. I have never heard an artist give such a soulful and intense concert, and I behaved like a teenager at Beetles concert. It was as though David and the whole band poured their heart and soul into each song. The thing that was perplexing was that the audience did not seem to appreciate David as he is in Chicago. If he had played like that in Chicago, he would have been mobbed.

My final David concert story was from last year. The guy I was dating at the time had not really been exposed to David until meeting me. Did I mention that I am a David Sanborn fein in that I have every recording released. I digress, anyway, this young man asked me to promise to go to a David Sanborn Concert with him regardless if we were dating or not. Fortunately, we were still dating at the time, January 1999, and he got front row tickets to the concert in Merriville, In. I later found out from Marcus Miller, that David thought I was flirting with him when I kept yelling "David, I'm Missing You". Marcus said he told him that I think she is referring to the song "Missing You". And they played that song at the end of the concert. Surfice to say, my date was very pleased that the last song was my request. We met Marcus and some other members of the band about 2 hours after the concert because we had drinks with some friends after the concert and ran into them on our way out. Marcus said that David was on the bus but I did not see him. I would give anything to meet him to found out what was his inspiration for Smile.
