PHOEBE HUANG (WE WANT)
(ROCK RECORDS) (NOV00)

我們都要流淚之後微笑唱情歌
我們都要為愛而戰堅持-黃嘉千
|
After just releasing her sell-out preview EP "Love
Has Risen To The Sky", Phoebe Huang (or Huang Jia Qian)
has officially come out with her full-length album "We
Want" (side-note : ok, she didn't heed my advice about her
fluffy hair-style but at least she has dropped that awful
"auntie" wardrobe she was spotted wearing in the EP).
Wholly produced by Jonathan Lee, the album
is packed with radio-friendly tracks. Under Big Brother
Jonathan's guidance, Phoebe has reportedly dropped her previous
high-note falsetto singing style and opted for a more
down-to-earth and heartfelt vocal approach.
The first single cum title track "We
Want" is a crowd-pleasing mid-tempo composition by Chris
You Hong Ming. The second single "Hard To Find
Happiness" is a slow-rock track composed by twin Bao Xiao
Bo. Her EP single "Love Has Risen To The Sky" is
also included here.

黃中原醞釀已久的同名專輯-「遙遠」,終於正式獻聲江湖
|
Song-writer Huang Zhong Yuan (or China Huang)
has come out with his very own album.
Earlier, his record company has
successfully launched a preview single CD, using an internet
mascot "eDuck"
to front his first single cum title track
"Faraway". The single CD was reportedly a hot
commodity in Taiwan due to its attractive packaging which
included a nicely-done Christmas card.
Even with the release of his current
full-length album, Huang continues to use the eDuck to represent
himself on the album cover and inner sleeves. The only
real glimpse that one can get hold of him is a picture of his
back facing the sea. But fret not, below is a pic of this
secretive and shy guy :-
China Huang Zhong Yuan
This album is a mix of his new and old
works. Let's start with the old works first. Huang
did his own covers of several hits that he has written for other
singers over the years, such as Sammi Cheng's
"Promise" (or Cheng Nuo), Ronald Chang's "Won't
Say Love You" (or Jue Kou Bu Ti Ai Ni), Nicholas Tse's
"Old Wound" (or Jiu Shang Kou), Valen Hsu's
"Don't Say Goodbye" and Winnie Hsin's "Let You
Fly" (or Rang Ni Qu Fei). Luckily, Huang's own covers
do not pale in comparison with the original versions as this guy
boasts a set of powerful and seasoned vocals (note : he has been
performing in Taiwan pubs for many years).
On the other hand, many of his new works
pale alongside the old hits. They sound too out-dated for
my own liking, I guess it has a bit to do with the two main
producers Chen Xiu Nan and Huang Da Jun, as they are musicians
who have already seen their peaks in the eighties and early
nineties. Even the lyrics were not spared, for instance,
in the second ballad single "Poison", Huang wrote
"... I'm waiting for you to feed me poison, let you have a
bitter bite on my chest .....", geez, I nearly freaked
out. On the brighter side, his title track
"Faraway" is a really nice and moving ballad which
begs repeated listening.
Finally, the limited-edition CD comes
bundled with a soft toy in the form of the the quacky cute
eDuck.

KEN WU (TOMORROW) (VIRGIN MUSIC) (NOV00)
|
耳朵的心裡的眼睛的腦海裡的
新發現吳克群
|
Virgin Music's third male artiste after
Stanley Huang and Craig Huo Jing Lun : Ken Wu (or Wu Ke Qun).
Virgin Music has labelled Ken as the pioneer of its
second-generation newcomers (note : its first generation
inductees include Chiang Mei Chi, Beauty Hou Xiang Ting and
Craig).
Some background info : he's 21 years old,
176cm, 60kg, currently a student pursuing a drama course, he was
discovered by Yao Qian after entering a singing contest
organised by MTV, and his looks have been described as a cross
between Jeff Chang and Richie Ren.
Because of his drama academic background,
he has been chosen as the leading actor in two of Chiang Mei
Chi's recent music videos : the touching and poignant
"Gentleness Of Your Hands" (or Shuang Shou De Wen Rou)
and "Thinking Of You" (or Dang Wo Xiang Qi Ni).
In addition, his new album has enclosed an earlier-released
movie theme song duet sung with Chiang Mei Chi titled
"Count" (or Xi Shu).
A strong production cast has been roped in
to helm his debut project : Jim Lee, Chris Babida, Peter Wong
and Zhou Shi Hui. Song writers include Guo Zi, Chris You
Hong Ming, Wang Zhi Ping, Yao Qian, Lin Xi and Adam Hsu Chang
De.
The title track "Tomorrow" is a
country-rock mid-tempo number co-written by Lin Xi. The
second single "Haven't Discovered All This While" is a
local work composed by Chen Zhi Wei (the same guy who wrote Jeff
Chang's "Won't Be Your Lover" (or Bu Zuo Ni De Ai Ren)
and written by Mu Zi.

HUANG ZI JIAO (JIAO JIAO'S
FOUR CHEAP SONGS) (FORWARD MUSIC) (NOV00)
|
Despite the recent negative news surrounding
his break up with the small sister of the sibling host duo, SOS,
Huang Zi Jiao's very first four-track EP (released around the
same time) still reportedly sold very well in Taiwan.
Jiao Jiao was able to come out with this EP
mainly because he was chosen as a spokesperson for a motor
advertisement in Taiwan. The first single "i
Seven" (a rap number) is the theme-song for this
advertisement and is composed by Chen Zhi Yuan and written by Wu
Xiong (the same guy who wrote another rap hit "Zi Yue"
for his colleague A Liang).
The other three tracks have previously been
released in other albums :
- "Fly
High" (or Zhan Chi Gao Fei) is the trio group song
performed alongside A Bao and A Liang;
- "Who's
Better Than Who" (or Shui Bi Shui Hao) is another group
song (again with A Bao & A Liang) which is the theme-song
for an ex-segment "Jiao Liang Competition" in Super
Sunday; and
- "I Can't Sleep Tonite" is the
tribute ballad work of the late Zhang Yu Sheng.
To increase the "commercial
attractiveness" of this release and for those who can't get
enough of this guy, the EP is bundled with four sets of bumper
stickers.
