H.L.B.

SPORTS UPDATE
by Lonnie Thibodaux

School spirit--a controversial subject that never fails to falter or completely drop out of sight when we need it the most. Or at least that is how most students feel. Recently, after the back-to-back upset losses to South and Central Lafourche, many were contnet with giving up completely on the HLB basketball program. These people have a lot to learn, or so it seems.

HLB's 1977-78 basketball team turned in an incredible 32-5 record. Did you really expect this season's squad to better that mark? If you look at the issues realistically, a trip to the state playoffs is possible, but not definite.

Lorin George's case of mononucleosis was being hailed as the absolute destruction of the basketball program at HLB. That is absolutely foolish! The result of the Thibodaux game surely proves that the Braves can win without Lorin. I'll surely agree that he's one of the top players in the state--but he's not the whole team. More confidence is needed in the rest of the team--because they'll get the job done.

The fans at the Thibodaux contest didn't really get into what was going on until Donald Tobias' dunk early in the second half. It was only a matter seconds following the stuff that the crowd once again returned to its usual "cheering." It will be the fans-- the sixth man on the team--that will tell the tale of the season. More support will be needed if it will have a happy ending.

SPORTS SHORT: The annual H. L. Bourgeois Fall Sports Program was held last night in the auditorium. The winners could not be released before press time, so the results will be reported in detail in the next issue.

WINNERS CIRCLE

When one stands 6 feet, 6 inches tall and is a "lanky" 195 lbs. it's not hard to be picked out in a crowd. But, senior Lorin George has many extra achievements that also help him to "standing above the rest."

"Lottie", as he is called by his basketball teammates, has amassed some outstanding feats both in the classroom and on the court. Academically, Lorin maintains a 3.5 plus average and is a member of the National Honor Society and Who' Who Among American High School Students. Athletically, Lorin has established himself as a top college prospect by his basketball exploits, thus far this season.

Lorin, who started his career at Vandebilt and then transferred to HLB as a sophmore, is currently averaging over 20 points and 7 rebounds a game. Also tough ballhandler, Lorin is near the top on the squad in assists, steals and blocked shots. He is also one of the top percentage shooters both from the field and the free throw line, adding to his already impressive statistics.

Chances are when the scholarship-signing time rolls around, Lorin George will be considered a grade-A prospect--both for his basketball expertise and his high academic standing.

REDHEADS COMING TO HLB

"The Basketball Sportacular" will again make its way to the HLB gym on Thursday night, February 8 as the All-American Red-Heads will take the the Houma All-Stars. The action will get underway at 8.

The Red-Heads are currently labeled as the World's Champion Womens' Basketball Team. Their annual visit to HLB will again be sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Orville Moore's team from Carroway, Arkansas is led by 6 foot, 10 inch center Susan "Spike" Callanan. Expected to lead the scoring punck for the All-Stars will be playercoach Don Schwab.

Tickets will go on sale shortly from any FCA member. The prices will be $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for students in advance. Prices at the door will be increased by 50 cents for each.

BRAVES HAVE BAD LUCK

HLB once again ran into bad luck against the two Lafourche Parish schools. This time, the basketballers were the victims.

The HLB varsity round-ballers fell to the South Lafourche Tarpons in the January 4th contest, 38-41. With only Lorin George in double figures (14 pts), the Braves were stunned by the Tarpons defense. The second loss came at the hands of Central Lafourche, 57-70. The loss was emminent even with outstanding performances by Lorin George and Les Rhodes who each complied 17 pts.

This brought the braves record to 1-2 in district play.
