1950 / 1950 Zappa moved with his parents to California and
begun to write songs and to play drums and guitar in high school bands. 1953 / 1953 His family had moved to Pacific Grove, south of
Monterey, Cal. There, twelve years old Frank went to summer school where
he took a basic training course in drumming for kids. His teacher was
Keith McKillip.. 1954 / 1954 Frank Zappa first heard of Edgard Varèse,
a record called The Complete Works of Edgard Varèse, Volume
1. The second album that Frank bought was The Rite of Spring,
by Stravinsky.. 1955 / 1955 Frank spent hours listening to Johnny "Guitar"
Watson, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, The Orchids, The Nutmegs,
The Gladiolas and all the great doo-wop groups. His favourite record
was Angel in my Life by The Jewels. Frank had continued his drum
practice. At the age of fourteen, Frank joined a high school band called
The Ramblers, which played covers of Little Richard releases such as
"Directly from my Heart to You". 1956 / 1956 FZ meets Don Van Vliet (later Captain
Beefheart) at Antelope Valley High School in Lancaster, Cal., and they
form The Blackouts. 1957 / 1957 Frank spent the summer with his aunt Mary
back in Baltimore and wrote to Edgard Varèse asking if he could
come up to New York and visit. He received a handwritten reply which
read: "Dear Mr. Zappa: I am sorry no to be able to grant you your
request. I am leaving for Europe net week and will be gone until next
spring. I am hoping however to see you on my return. With best wishes.
