• Another B-Movie sountrack called Run Home Slow enable FZ to finance his own Studio Z in Cucamonga, Cal. He continues to gig with local bands like The Masters and The Soul Giants.

• Frank put together a band called The Soots, featuring FZ (guitar and vocals), Alex St. Clair (guitar), Vic Mortensen (drums) and Don Van Vliet (lead vocals). Don whom Frank the nickname Captain Beefheart after a story about Don's uncle flashing his "beef heart" at Don's girlfriend Laurie.

• Studio Z is closed after Zappa is arrested and given a 10 day jail sentence in San Bernardino Prison, plus 3 years probation, because FZ has cut, for a much-needed $ 100, a mock-pornographic tape for a vice squad officer posing as a used car salesman. Zappa remembered in 1969: "There were 45 men in the jail cell, the toilet and shower had never been cleaned, the temperature was 110 degrees so you couldn't sleep by night or day, there were roaches in the oatmeal, sadistic guards, and everything that was nice". After this, Zappa moves to L.A. and puts together The Muthers from the remains of earlier band The Soul Giants, comprising FZ (guitar), Ray Collins (vocals), Elliott Ingber (guitar), Roy Estrada (bass) and Jimmy Carl Black (drums).

• The group is offered a management contract by Herb Cohen and begins a residency at the Whiskey A-Go-Go club. The name is amended to The Mothers.
