- Lou Reed,
leader of the group Velvet Underground, said about Zappa: "He's
probably the single most untalented person I've heard in my life. He's
two-bit, pretentions, academic, and he can't play rock'n'roll, because
he's a loser. And that's why he dresses up funny. He's not happy with
himself and I think he's right". [28/29]
1966 - The
Mothers played at Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco. The opening audition
band was The Jefferson Airplane. [26]
1967 - Absolutely Free released. MGM refused to print the
words to the songs because they deemed them to be obscene, even though
the same words could be sung on record. 1969 - Zappa begins to lecture
on the US college circuit, speaking in New York, Los Angeles and elsewere. [15] 1970 - 200 Motels performed
in concert with the L.A. Philharmonic, at Pauley Pavillion, UCLA, for
the Contempo 70 Festival. 1972 - LP Just Another
Band From L.A., recorded at the UCLA concert, makes US #85. 1978 - Double live LP Zappa
in New York reaches US #57 and UK #55. 1979 - "Dancin' Fool",
a disco parody extracted from LP Sheik Yerbouti makes US #45. 1981 - Double live LP Tinsel
Town Rebellion, the first release on Zappa's new Barking Pumpkin
label, reaches US #66 and UK #55. 1983 - LP The Man From
Utopia makes US #153 and UK #87. [9/10] 1997 - The brazilian
group The Central Scrutinizer Band played in São Paulo, Brazil,
at Blue Night Jazz bar. The band play only music of FZ. [20] 1997 - Ryko label released
Strictly Genteel, a collection of Zappa's instrumental compositions.
There are 18 tracks, including "Pedro's Dowry", "Outrage
at Valdez" and "Aybe Sea". [27] 1997 - Denny Walley,
who played guitar on the last night of Zappa's Universe performing the
blues version of "Bamboozled by Love', released his own CD called
Spare Parts. |
