Samuel Barclay Beckett
(Dublin, 1906 - Paris, 1989)

Escritor e poeta irlandês, criador do teatro do absurdo ao lado de Eugène Ionesco (1912-1994). Amigo de outro ilustre conterrâneo na juventude, James Joyce (1882-1941), Beckett radicou-se em Paris a partir de 1928, onde passou a escrever primeiro em francês e depois traduzindo para seu idioma natal com o poema Whoroscope (trocadilho de prostituta – whore – com horóscopo – horoscope –, 1930). Participou da Resistência Francesa à invasão nazista, em meio à Segunda Guerra Mundial, sendo forçado a viver na clandestinidade, em 1942. Seus trabalhos refletiam uma forte concepção niilista da vida. Foi consagrado internacionalmente com a representação de sua peça Esperando Godot (1953), onde dois velhos mendigos aguardam em vão, durante muito tempo, pela chegada de alguém que nunca virá. A vacuidade da condição humana também se repetiu em outras obras como Dias Felizes (1961), o monólogo de uma mulher com seu marido que se estende por dois atos, à medida que o monte de lixo no qual está enterrada se avoluma. Em 1969, Beckett ganhou o prêmio Nobel de Literatura que reconhecia assim sua importância como representante da “literatura da angústia”. What is the Word (Qual é a Palavra), seu último poema, foi publicado, em 1990, logo após sua morte.
