Friends Can Be Lovers


I’m getting married!
That came like an avalanche on’s head. Of course he was happy for his best friend but somehow it 
didn’t feel right.
_Congratulations! – he said with a weak smile on his face.
_Thanks! Kenny and I are really happy!
_I know you are!
held his friend and in a flash he saw their lives together. He metwhen he moved with his 
parents to a house next hers. They were 7 andwas the first in the neighborhood to talk to him. 
Since that day they became inseparable, just like Joey and Dawson from “Dawson’s Creek”; and even when 
she got in college, moved out from her house anddid the same, they still saw each other almost 
everyday.
_Well, I have to go now. I’m gonna tell the news toand.
_They don’t know yet?
_Of course not! I wanted my best friend to be the first to know.
smiled asgave a kiss on his cheek. They said goodbye and the girl left him stood still in 
front of the house trying to digest the information he just had received ‘till his mates showed up.
_What are you doing here outside? –asked.
_just left.
_Well, it doesn’t explain why you’re out in the cold weather wearing a t-shirt. –said hitting 
’s left arm.
_I’m…I’m kinda shocked with what she said to me.
_So tell us inside! –said opening the door.
The boys got inside the house andsat on the couch still petrified. 
_So, what did she say? –asked.
_She’s getting married.
_With Kenny? –asked holding his laughter.
_Who else? –answered standing up.
_And why are you so shocked? Only becauseis marrying Kenny the dumb ass? –yelled 
from the kitchen.
_Well, if they love each other I think it’s ok even though he’s a dumb ass. –said still holding his 
laughter.
_Kenny is a dumb ass but he makes her happy so I should be happy for her being happy. –  
explained.
_But? – his mates asked altogether.
_I’m not!
came running from the kitchen asandstood up.
_What? –asked clueless.
_Maybe you started to develop some feelings for. –analyzed.
_What do you mean?
_Maybe you’re falling in love with her. –said seriously.
looked at his mates and burst into laugh.
_You gotta be kidding!
left the living room and went to his room. Meanwhilegot home to tell the news to her 
mates.
_!! Where are you?
_We’re in the kitchen!
_Hey guys!
_Where were you? –asked.
_At’s.
_For a change! –joked.
_I was there to give him the news I’m gonna give you now.
_Are you pregnant? –asked worried.
_No! Kenny and I are getting married!
showed the ring to her mates and all of them started to jump up and down like children; but 
suddenlygot serious.
_Howreacted?
_He said he was happy for me.
_I’m sorry. –said holding her. 
_That’s ok… I need to move on with my life.
It wasn’t a secret forandthatwas in love withsince they were 14 when he 
got his first girlfriend.tried to tell him about her feelings for several times and sent him signs that 
even Steve Wonder could see butonly saw her as a sister, that’s all. No matter how she loved 
she couldn’t wait for him forever and Kenny was the guy every girl wanted: sensitive, tender, 
thoughtful and handsome. That’s why the guys called him a dumb ass, anythingwanted Kenny 
was there to make all her wishes come true. All but havingfor herself.
For two monthshad been busy with all the arrangements for the wedding but still she managed 
to seeregularly. The boy got used to the idea ofgetting married ‘though he didn’t agree 
much, actually, he wasn’t believing much but the coin dropped in a Friday night; the Dawson and Joey’s 
night.
_Hey!
_Hi! I brought some food.
_You call this junk food?
_Ok, ok… what did you rent for us to watch? If there’s a “Lord Of The Rings” in that pile I swear I’ll beat 
you up!
_No, there’s no “Lord Of The Rings” so relax. I got for us “The Ring”; the Japanese version of course; 
“Infidelity” and “Men On Fire”.
_You really want me to stay here with you tonight, right?
_Why are you saying that?
_”The Ring”? I couldn’t sleep with the American version!
_So I guess you have to stay ‘cause it’s the last film I wanna watch! –said laughing. 
_Fine! Just lend me one of your clothes.
They went to’s room and soon they were laid in his bed watching the movies. First “Men On Fire”, 
aswas amazed by Dakota Fenning’s acting the mostcould see was how Denzel 
Washington was handsome and how lucky Jennifer Lopes was for having Marc Anthony as he husband. 
When it was time for “Infidelity”had something to say.
_I was almost forgetting. Here is my wedding invitation. I wanted to give you personally.
took it in his hands and just stared at it more shocked than two months ago but the invitation 
was just part of whathad to say.
_I wanna ask you something.
_W…what?
_We’ve known each other since we were kids and since my father died and you know it, of course, I was 
wondering if you could take me down the aisle.
_Me?!
_Yeah you. So, can you do it?
The boy didn’t know what to say. Everytime they talked about the future,always said that 
was the guy who’d “deliver” her to her groom and he agreed with that but now that was really 
happening he didn’t want to, and he didn’t know why.
_Of course I can! It’ll be my pleasure. –said faking an enthusiasm.
_Thanks! You’re the best!
held him and gave a kiss on his cheek. They sat on the bed again to watch the movies left but 
after what happeneddidn’t pay attention in anything. It was true,was going to marry 
and though he thought it wouldn’t happen so early, it was right there in front of him. couldn’t 
stop thinking about the moments they shared and how many times he felt like kissing her or something 
but never had the guts to go through it. During “The Ring” it could be seen thatwas really scared 
so she held’s hand really tight and that moment the boy realized that his mates were right, he was 
in love with. 
All night longdidn’t letsleep ‘cause she was scared to even close her eyes. They talked 
about plenty of things but never mentioned her wedding. After hours,was able to make the girl 
sleep but on the next day she had to meet Kenny.sat on the living room all alone thinking about

_Good morning mate. –greeted – Where’s?
_She left minutes ago.
_Is everything ok? I mean, she always has breakfast with us when she sleeps over.
_She had to meet Kenny.
_Oh…
_, she’s really getting married! –said kinda desperate.
_I know.
_She gave me the invitation yesterday and wants me to take her down the aisle.
_What did you say?
_I said yes.
_That’s tough.
_You were right, I’m in love with. I love her and I never noticed before! Why?
_’Cause we never see what we really need in front of us, we’re always looking in places far away.

_I can’t let her marry Kenny.
_Wow! Wait a minute! You can’t do anything.
_Why not?
_You’ve known each other since you were 7, you had all this time to do something. She’s happy now, she 
found the perfect guy for her and Kenny was lucky finding a girl like. You don’t have the right of 
ruining her life.
looked at, he knew his mate was right, there was nothing he could do but supporting his best 
friend and not being selfish thinking about his lost love.

_I know. But it’s too late now.
_I know, I’m gonna be happy for her and take her down the aisle.

went to his room to think about the chance he let pass and started to compare himself with 
Kenny. Guess what? Kenny won in every category so, feeling that Kenny was a better man for it 
was easy for him to accept her wedding. Meanwhile, after meeting Kenny,went home.
_Did you spend the night with? –asked.
_Yes, but I left early this morning ‘cause I had to meet Kenny.
_Did you give the invitation to? –asked a bit concerned.
_Yes and he agreed to take me down the aisle.
_Man, he’s really blind! –said hopeless
_Well, there’s nothing I can do about it. All I have to worry about is my wedding.
_It’s so unreal! I mean, in a month you’re gonna be Mrs.Katsopolis. –said.
_And you’re gonna leave us all alone. –said kinda whining.
_I know… I’m gonna miss you too.
The girls hugged each other kinda saying goodbye but deep inside,didn’t wanna marry Kenny 
for real. Instead of being Mrs. Katsopolis she wanted to be Mrs.and it was killing her inside but 
she couldn’t wait foranymore.
The whole monthhad been busy with her wedding and tired not to think aboutwho 
helped the girl the whole time without mentioning the fact that he was in love with her. The night before 
the wedding’s friends wanted to throw a party for her but she decided to spend her last night as a 
single woman with.
_More wine? – he asked holding a bottle.
_Yes please! – the girl answered laughing.
_How are you feeling?
_I’m great! I can’t wait for tomorrow.
_You’re gonna be a beautiful bride.
_Thank you.
The boy smiled, he wasn’t lying when he said that. Talking about her wedding was making feel 
empty inside; it was like a hole opening in his soul.
Around 2am they were still talking when suddenly a silence came between them.wanted to kiss 
her but stayed immobile just staring at’s beautiful face. The girl looked straight into his eyes and 
wanted to do the same but Kenny crossed her mind so she decided to kill the moment.
_So, do you wanna score?
Even getting shocked by the proposal, the boy considered a positive answer but before he could act, 
started to laugh.
_I’m just kidding!
_I know that! –said kinda disappointed.
gave him a hug and realized that something was going on there but before she could make a fool 
of herself, she let him go.
_Could you take me home?
_Sure.
took his car and gave a ride to the girl.
On the way she was looking through his CD case and found one of Mariah Carey’s CD among them.
_Music Box?
_An ex-girlfriend gave to me. Why?
_First is funny the idea of you listening to Mariah Carey and second, I love one of the songs of this CD.

He looked at the girl and noticed that her thoughts were far away, he thought she probably was thinking 
about Kenny… wrong!was thinking about the one she really loved,. The boy stopped 
the car in front of her house, she gave him a kiss on the check and held him really tight.
_I love you.

Both closed their eyes, they were saying what they were really feeling but understanding everything wrong, 
they couldn’t see the truth.left the car then got in her house. She went straight to her room full 
of doubts, she knew she had to move on with her life but now that the wedding was hours away she didn’t 
want to.couldn’t sleep that night and neither as. The boy tossed and turned on his bed thinking 
of how much he’d lose on the next day.
At 6pm everything was ready for the ceremony,got dressed and waited forto pick her up 
with the limo. When he got there and sawhe got amazed.
_You look beautiful! –said mouth opened.
_Thanks! You’re the most handsome man I’ve ever seen in my life!
blushed and for a moment he felt like he was the one marring.
_Is everything ready? – the girl asked.
_Yes, Kenny is already waiting for you at the church.
took a deep breath and smiled.
_Let’s go then.
opened the limo’s door and helpedget in the car. All the way to the church they were 
quite, they just looked at each other and smiled. For several times he felt like saying how he was feeling 
and begging her not to marry Kenny but it was way too late.
They got at the church, everybody assumed their places , the groom was ready at the altar, the music 
started to play and soon Duncan was takingdown the aisle. Every step he took was like a shot 
through his heart. He looked at Kenny happy and kept picturing himself in the groom’s place. When they 
reached the altar,gave a kiss on’s check and took a dep breath.

_Are you nervous?
The girl looked straight into his eyes and said something that intrigued him.
_I’m not nervous… I’m sad.
Beforecould say something Kenny thanked him and took.sat on the banch 
nextwith a big question mark in his head.
_Just like in Dawson’s Creek, Pacey gets Joey and Dawson stays all alone sucking his thumb.
_Shut up! Being here in this church is already painful!
looked atand didn’t say a word. The ceremony was beautiful and the priest was saying 
beautiful things.
_Kenneth Katsopolis, do you takeas your beloved wife?

felt a pain in his stomach when he heard those words, he knew that was it;was a few 
words away of being married.

closed his eyes waiting for her answer but the unexpected happened.
_Well… Kenny, I like you really much. You’re a lovely person but I’m not the one for you. I’m sorry, I 
really am! And I hope you can forgive me one day.
Everyone in the church got shocked.’s mates were mouth opened andwas frozen in his 
seat not understanding what was going on.gave Kenny a hug then turned to facewho 
had his eyes wide opened.
_Gosh! I can’t believe how blind you are!
left the church letting everybody curious about her decision.went after her but he came back 
real soon.
_She got in the limo and took off!
_Where would she go? –asked.
_Maybe she went back home or to your place. –said.
_Ok, you go to your place andand I go to mine.
organized everybody and soon they were on their way.wasn’t at home or at’s 
house. The boy thought for a while and decided to look for her at the places she usually went to think 
about her life. He took his car and started to drive around town. After an hour looking for her he started 
to get desperate.
_Come on, where are you?
He stopped the car and saw his CD case at the front seat. He took Mariah Carey’s CD and decided to listen 
to’s favorite song; maybe it could lead him to her.
_”We've known each other/For a long long time/But I never really noticed/All the magic in your eyes/
I've been around you/A thousand times before/And you've always been a friend to me/But now I'm 
wanting more…”
heard those worlds and started to pay attention at the song. As Mariah sang finally sank in what 
happened in the church.
_She likes me! That’s why she said I was blind!
The boy speed up and the song led him to wherewas.stopped in a diner and found 
still in her wedding dress eating a huge hamburger. She seemed to be fine like nothing had 
happened.

The girl raised her head and sawcoming towards her as everybody watched them intrigued.
_What are you doing here? – she asked drinking her coke.
_I’m the one who ask you that! You said that bullshit at the church and now you’re eating junky like 
nothing happened!
_Well, something happened; I didn’t get married.
sat down, he wanted to talk to her about his discover but he didn’t know how, so he decided to 
talk about what happened.
_Why?
_Like I said at church, I like Kenny but he’s not the one for me. I’ve always been in love with someone else.
looked straight into’s eyes not knowing if he got the message.

_Since the day you said you were getting married I realized how much I don’t wanna lose you.
_That was how I felt.
_When you gave me the invitation I got desperate! I didn’t wanna be selfish and ruin your happiness.
_But I was waiting for you to do that! I wanted you to do that!
_Why didn’t you say that before?
_’Cause you seemed not wanting the same as me.

chocked and everyone in the diner looked at them waiting a reaction from the girl but she was so 
shocked that she didn’t know what to do.
_I love you, I’m not lying, I’ve never realized it but I always did. Thinking about the past, the things we’ve 
shared, I wanted to be with you.
The girl still didn’t react and carried on looking at. The boy was nervous waiting for an answer 
when one of the costumers yelled.
_KISS HIM STUPID!
andstarted to laugh and realized that everybody was staring at them thenlooked 
atagain.
_”Kiss him stupid.”
got closer to, brushed her lips on his and finally they kissed. Everybody in the diner started 
to whistle and clap.
_I guess they liked the end of this movie. –said kissing’s forehead.
_Well, I know I’m liking the beginning of it!
