The Caledonian Amateur League was founded by Douglas Smith of Drumchapel Amateurs in an attempt at improving the status of amateur football, in particular the poor ground conditions that existed.

Douglas particularly liked the idea of a ‘pyramid’ system that would allow the best sides to compete with each other. Additional criteria that the playing surfaces, facilities and organisation of promoted clubs should meet a specified standard brought pressure from existing leagues who argued that it should be they who should be at the head of a new ‘Premier’ league.

The only answer to the problem would be to start again. A number of meetings were arranged in the North British Hotel in Glasgow and those which attended were Anchor, Babcock & Wilcox, Bannockburn, Barr & Stroud, Bellaire, Cambusbarron Rovers, Colville Park, Cumbernauld Thistle, Drumchapel, Giffnock North, Glasgow University, Jordanhill College, Muirend, Queen’s Park (Hampden XI), St. Mungo’s FP, Stirling University, Strathclyde Police, Viewfield Rovers, Weir Recreation and Westerlands. Other clubs including Stanley, Knightswood and Cardross Rock also wanted to be included in the new league. Eventually sixteen of these clubs agreed to become part of the new Caledonian Amateur League and were split into two sections of eight. Both of the sections seen as of equal standing and would be named, not by number or letter, but by colour - Red and Black - and the winners of each section would be joint League Champions. Before the League got under way Anchor lost the use of their ground and the club became defunct and were replaced by another Renfrewshire side, Stanley. After a season the top sides formed Division 1 and the rest Division 2, with promotion and relegation between the two sections.

The League also runs two cup competitions. The League Cup, which is played during the early part of the season, and the Queen’s Park Trophy, which was originally intended as the League Championship trophy, but was instead put up for the premier cup tournament.

Queen’s Park Hampden XI resigned from the league and were replaced by Stirling University.

Barr & Stroud changed their name to Netherton as the company they were named after had been sold and the team had no connection with the new owners.
