Junior football is a bit of a nightmare subject to research in Dumfriesshire - there are three distinct periods when the juniors flourished - late 19th & early 20th century, 1911-26, and 1945-53. In the first period the more prominent clubs operated on a well-organised basis while others (not included here) seem to have been a group of lads who lived on the same street who played together in a couple of friendlies before disappearing. Although these clubs were described as ‘junior’ in the press they would struggle to have even reached juvenile level. Then we come to the Stewartry & Wigtownshire where junior football was prominent until the late 1920s but the term ‘junior’ was used to describe the reserve sides of senior clubs, and junior clubs as a separate entity were few and far between. To add to the confusion some of these reserve sides adopted a separate name to play in junior competitions, for example St Cuthbert Wanderers Reserves played for a period as Kirkcudbright Scorpions in cups but retained the SCW Reserves name for friendlies over the same period.

The first Association formed in the county was the Dumfries, Maxwelltown & District Junior FA in 1892. The Junior Cup was first played in 1892-93, and was proving so successful that the FA introduced a second competition in 1900, the Junior Shield. The trophy was in the shape of a shield and had the inscription ‘Queen of the South Junior Challenge Shield Instituted 1900’ engraved on it. There was also a brief attempt at a league in 1899-1900, but, like their Senior counterparts, this wasn’t successful. By 1907, the Junior scene in the county was on the wane and the Junior FA disbanded.

In late 1911, the association was briefly revived as the Dumfries & Maxwelltown Junior FA. The Cup and Shield were reintroduced but the FA would appear to have disbanded within two years.

After the Great War, October 1919 saw the third attempt in the shape of the Dumfries & Galloway Junior FA. Eighteen clubs in total joined the new association, Annan Comrades, Annan YMCA, Burns Select, Castle Douglas Athletic Creetown Juniors, Dalbeattie Trades, Dalry, Gatehouse Comrades, Hoddam Rangers, Kello Rovers, Loreburn United, Maxwelltown United, Nithsdale, Rosefield, St Andrew’s, St Cuthbert’s Juniors, Solway Star Juniors and Tayleurians. Once again the Cup and Shield were put up for competition. The last season of this association was in 1925-26 and by then the Shield was played for on a league basis.

In 1945, the last attempt at a Junior association was when the Dumfries & District Amateur Junior FA was formed, A total of eleven clubs joined up namely Annan Athletic, Conheath Bluebell, Dumfries British Legion, Haugh of Urr, Holywood Star, LMS Rovers, Lochar United, Moffat United, Nithside and St Andrew’s and Kirkconnel Athletic, who were the first champions. A request for the return of the old Cup and Shield proved fruitless, so the JFA created new competitions. The Johnstone-Currie Cup was played for from 1946, the British Leagion Cup from 1947 and the short-lived Supplementary League Cup from 1949. By giving up its amateur status in 1947 and affiliating itself with the Scottish Junior FA, the association enabled its clubs to compete in the Scottish Junior Cup. By 1951, Gretna and Annan Athletic had both left to join the more competitive Carlisle & District League and with Nithsdale Wanderers opting to join Kello Rovers in the Western Junior League, it proved impossible to organize a viable series of competitions for the 1951-52 season. The upshot was that the Dumfries & District Junior FA decided to call it a day and disbanded.

Nithsdale Wanderers eventually disbanded in 1963, leaving Kello Rovers as the only Junior club remaining not only in Dumfries-shire, but in the whole of the Dumfries & Galloway region.
