PSYCHOLOGY RESEARCH PARTICIPATION

As a student in Principles of Psychology (101/102) and Introduction to Cognitive Science (103/104), you are required to participate in experiments in order to receive research points or R points. Your participation is crucial for the completion of these experiments and is most appreciated by the experimenters. You also learn first hand how behavioral research is conducted.

By the end of the semester you need to receive 3 R points different experiments require different amounts of time and therefore provide one, two, or three R points each.

For the Fall semester, you must complete 2 of your 3 R points by November 15; for the Spring semester, you must complete 2 of your 3 R points by March 31. If you do not complete your 2 R points by these dates or your 3 R points by the end of the semester, you will receive a temporary grade (T grade) that is one letter grade below what you actually deserve (e.g., a B instead of a B+ or a D instead of a C). The T grade will become your permanent grade if you do not complete your R points during the next semester. If you sign up for an experiment and then cannot show up, you must contact the appropriate person in advance (the person to contact will be provided to you when you make your appointments). If you do not show up without first canceling your appointment, the number of R points will be deducted from your total (and added to the three required).

If you object to participating in these experiments, you will need to complete a paper of about five pages on a topic chosen by your instructor. Speak to your instructor as soon as possible about this option.

To fulfill your research participation requirements this semester, you need to visit this web site:

http://www.experimetrix.com/nwk-psych

At this site, you will be able to Register. Select new user and submit the information requested. In order to receive the proper credit for your participation, you must register with your real name and your student ID number (Social Security number). You will receive an email with your logon and password.

You may view and sign up for any experiments listed assuming you meet the criteria and have not previously participated in the same study. You will receive confirmation and a reminder of your scheduled appointment.

Select log in to view your research appointments and assign your R points to the proper course. (It is possible that some students may be in more than one course requiring R points during the same semester).

If you have any difficulty with the online research participation system, please inform your Teaching Assistant or your Professor during the next class.
