~`Fellowship cloak`~

Below is a little bit of info on how I made the cloaks and some pictures of the finished product before I wrapped it up and gave it to Jan. Please be patient while the pictures load. I got the instructions from the LOTR_Costume Research Page(AlleyCatScratch), and theirs is really what I based mine on. Actually, I had hoped to use the entire page of directions, but I had one slight problem: I did not buy enough material. :( it was the perfect stuff, too! See, the store was getting rid of all it's winter fabrics to make way for their spring line, and I found this in the clearance section. I seriously recommend going to the LOTR_Costume Research Page and study and use their instructions for the cloak. Their pattern and directions are fantastic!

1.) I used a nice, very light-weight, woolen fabric (I'm not really sure what it's exactly made of) that is greenish in appearance. (See photo of fabric at right.) woolscrap.JPG (61341 bytes)

There were only about 3 yards of this, unfortunately, I was hoping there would be 4 1/2 like the AlleyCatScratch site suggested, but not the case. *NOTE - Let me just say before I get too far, if you have 4 1/2 yards of fabric, you really should use their pattern! :)* This page is just about how I worked around my problem with some improvising.

2.) For the cape part, I bought a pattern that in the end looks  sort of close to AlleyCat's. The pattern is McCall's 3658, and just use the one showing the cape. When you lay this out, you'll need to draw with the chalk beyond the edge of the pattern so you can get as voluminous a cape a possible. (See drawing at left.)capepattern.JPG (160643 bytes) Just play around with the shape you want

3.) Once you've got it all cut out, from here you should follow the rest of LOTR_Costume Research's directions for the hood and everything else.

Check out my hood pattern! *I REALLY hate this picture of me!! Oh well ;-)* Anyway, look closely at what I am pointing at. When I went to use some old newspapers, that pic was on one of them. I thought 'hey, why not include a LOTR - TTT movie ad in the pattern for a LOTR hood??' It works. :-D
