My room is small. VERY small. And I needed a mirror in my room somewhere, but wasn't crazy about the idea of putting one up and wasting the little space I had for a mirror, when I could be using the space for my precious LOTR posters, LOL! So, after I made the Gondorian banner for my window, I had the perfect idea as to what would work. The mirror would go on the backside of my door, and I would make a banner of Rohan that could be hung over it, and just moved to the side like a curtain when I needed to use the mirror. :-) I picked the green horse one that is pictured in the "Making of the Trilogy" book. A very small picture to go from, let me tell you!! First of all, the door needed to be repainted, because it was the color of my old room - blue, and then unfortunately my Knight's Tale poster as well as our famous "wall" (if your really curious about this, email me, LOL!) had to be dismantled. ;-) On to the banner! For the main part of the banner, the green background
part, I found some nice dark green satin from JoAnn's. The horse head design fabric is
white felt that I have had pretty much since the Two Towers came out in theatres! The
golden "sun" (that Brynn thinks looks like the UN flag!! Thanks a lot, Brynn!)
as well as the yellow piece on the top, and the Celtic designs were all made out of a
yellow quilting material that I also bought a long time ago, and actually intended to use
it for my Merry vest. I thought it was just too yellow for that. ;-) That stuff frayed SO
badly, I'll never use that material again for another banner!! I used gold bias tape for
the edges, and actually, the green Celtic knotwork at the top (which got *really* messed
up!) is a package of dark green piping that I was also going to use on the Merry
costume. (The coat) It was coming along so nicely until I cut out the "UN flag"
sun, and then things just started quickly getting out of proportion, but I am kind of
pleased with how it turned out. I wasn't so sure there for a while. ;-) All the designs I drew free hand individually on
large sheets of paper. (My dad has tons of old plans that I use, he's a
contractor so those are in abundance, lol!) Now, to attach all of these individual pieces,
I know, this is nuts, but, every single little piece you see on the banner I sewed
on using a small zig-zag stitch. SO relieved to have it done! When it came time to do the
horse's face, I made a huge mistake (Grrr!!! I was so mad!) because I
was falling asleep, and had to rip, with the seam ripper, the entire main part of the
horse head off and start over. I was this close to being done, too! :-(I went to
sleep, and then the next day I drew on my horse's face in one try and then went ahead and
stitched over it with the zig-zag again. Elation! It worked! The banner in it's middle stages, I
was almost to the horse-head-ripping
To finish the banner up, I ran the above mentioned green piping along the top in a terrible attempt at a Celtic scroll, lol, and I bought a 7/8 inch dowel from JoAnn's that I measured and cut to the right size and then stole my dad's drill from his truck, hehe I told him I was doing it anyway, and drilled my holes for the cord. Then, I bought a drapery tie or something also from JoAnn's and just draped it around the top part of the banner. At some point, I'll properly attach it, but for right now, it's fine. :-)

I will be working on Arwen's Bedroom Banner here very soon for Brynn's birthday. Check back!! |
