Scribblers Brevard

Our meeting was called to order by our illustrious President Jean. We had two guests present. Andrea who says she is an aspiring writer and Al Miller who is currently working on a book out the Mercury 7 missions. He is also working on some short stories about being a botanist. Bill reintroduced himself to members. He works at the Space Center and writes about whatever pops into his head.

 

Treasurer was not present as he was off again on a trip for work. He sent an email to the President and Secretary to let us know that there is currently $4824.71 in our treasury.

 

Jean read a much shortened version of the minutes of the last meeting. She stated that Nancy had abandoned us by going making a trip to rescue some sugar gliders.

 

Our business manager David reported copies of the current issue of Driftwood were for sale. Members having stories in were able to purchase their first copy for $8 and following copies would be $10. There were also a few of the previous Driftwood for sale as well for $3.

 

Norma stated there were a few changes to the grading forms for the judges who will be looking at the prose category. We also are in need of three poetry judges and one prose judge. Members were asked if they knew of anyone might to serve as a judge.

 

Members were also reminded they pay less for any submissions they make to the upcoming Driftwood.

 

Nancy reminded members that dues need to be paid as soon as possible. Scott wants to be able to get a new membership roster out soon.

 

We have set up a book exchange. Members can bring in any books they no longer want and choose one of those left by others. Any books left at the end of the meeting will be donated to the library for book sales.

 

A drawing was made for 3 gifts donated to our group by the new director of the library. Winners were Maurice, Andrea and David. Congratulations winners!

 

A suggestion was made that we post the guidelines for the Driftwood at the library in hopes of getting more stories, as well as making our publication known to the public.

 

Jean discussed with the new directory about our “WordsWorth Day” It was proposed to have this event on April 25th. We will have our regular meeting from 9:30-12:00 followed by clean up of the room from 12:00 to 1:00. Public will be invited in from 1:00 – 4:00. A cooking demonstration will be given and all food prepared would be served to all those in attendance.

 

Janet Bruce made a suggestion we speak with the library about storing all of our historical data at the library. Jean said she would get with the Director to see if this was a possible solution to our storage problem of scrapbook etc.

 

Surfside Theater in Cocoa Beach is looking for persons to write a one act play that could be performed by the theater. More information on this can be obtained by contacting the theater group.

 

Bill Allen has copies of his two books Greg Hart, Dragon Slayer and The Hero Who Slayed Ruuan. He states prices our $14 for unsigned copies and $10 for any that he signs.

 

Frank Cona has sold all copies of his book Salt In My Socks and will be printing a second run. Please see Frank if you are interested in obtaining a copy.

 

Walt Latham also has numerous books for sale that he has written. Contact Walt for more information on what he has available.

 

Nancy is currently working on a special website for all members who have published works. The site will be linked off our main page. The page will allow members to post information on books they have published. Members will be able give a brief synopsis of their book, a photo of the front cover, cost of the book and who a person can contact to purchase a copy of the book. She will bring in her laptop for the next meeting for members to look at what she has come up with so far.  Jean states wishes to pay Nancy for this service if members agreed.

 

Readers were called:

 

Kevin Hurley read a character sketch for a novel he is in the process of writing.

 

Frank Cona was next with a story called Third Planet From The Sun. A look at the problems of Global Warming and what can be done to stop it.

 

Jim Badger read a poem he will be submitting to this years Driftwood it was Heart Has No Bones. He then read two poems he had written for his fiancé the first was called You Could Have Had A Gentlemen and the second one I Will Love You So.

 

Dave Clark followed with an interesting tale called Lizards. About deadly biting lizards.

 

Angela Rella delighted us with another story about her family called Holy Water. This one was about how her mom and mother in law made a very special “Holy Water.”

 

Our last reader was Bill who began reading  a story he is submitting to the Driftwood. It was entitled Manja Gunfighter.

 

Meeting was adjourned at 1145 with an invitation for lunch at San Remo.
