March 14, 2009
Our meeting was called to order by our President Jean. We had three guests present. Craig who is a retired cruise director for several cruise different cruise lines. Kay meet him at the local book fair and invited him to join us. Craig has two books out. One is called It?s All About Me and the second It?s All About Us. These books can be used as a personal historical record. Craig has them for sell for $20 each. His website ForSelfHistorians.com should be up and running soon.
Our two other guest were George and Gracie, Dave and Nancy?s sugar gliders. They were very well behaved and did not cause any problem during the meeting.
Minutes from our February 28th meeting were read and approved with no corrections
Treasurer was not present as he was off again on a trip for work. An email was sent to the President and Secretary to let us know that there is currently $4824.71 in our treasury.
Old Business: Our business manager David reported copies of the current issue of Driftwood were for sale. Members having stories in were able to purchase their first copy for $8 and following copies would be $10. There were also a few of the previous Driftwood for sale as well for $3.
He also said he had put the word out at the school about needing judges for the Driftwood. He had several folks that were interested until he dropped the bombshell, they would be reading around 70+ submissions. They quickly refused. So judges are still needed.
Kay Williams daughter makes up buttons. Kay had one on with the name of her book on it. If you are interested in? having a button made up for something please get with Kay.
Frank Cona is taking orders for his book Salt In My Socks and is printing a second run. Please see Frank if you are interested in obtaining a copy.
Nancy forgot her laptop and promised to bring it to the next meeting for those who might be interested in the webpage she has created for members to post their published works for sale.
Before the readers were called we had a special presentation by Peggy Downey Ball on proof reading. Peggy brought up some great points
v Exclamation Points ? No more than one exclamation point at the end of a sentence. Putting in more than one will take away the meaning. If? a person is speaking and that person is making point, you would place the exclamation point inside the quotes. When a person is repeating something someone else said then it goes on the outside.
v Question Marks ? They are basically the same rule applies as the exclamation point as to placement.
v Commas and periods ? They go inside the quotation marks, this way they don?t get lost.
v Colons and semicolons ? They go outside of the quotation marks.
v There is still disagreement on the placement of a comma when you are listing a long list of things. Old school says you don’t put it before the and, whereas new school says you do. Either way is correct..
Many thanks to Peggy for her very informative information.
Readers were announced.
Our meeting was adjourned at 11:45 with an invitation for lunch at San Reno?s..
Respectfully submitted
