Scribblers Brevard
March 28, 2009
Our meeting was called to order by our President, Jean Pastula at 10:00.
We had two visitors who were both members of the Florida Writers Association. John Lavelle who has a Doctorate in Literature. He works at FIT. Jason Harris also a member of FWA and works at FIT.
Our treasure was back from his worldly travels. Scott reported that there is currently $4954.71 in our bank account. He also brought up an interesting point regarding personal checks. There are times when checks that have a very dark color or dark background there are problems with these checks being scanned by the bank. As a suggestion he said it is a wise move to have light colored checks.
Scott also stated that he is closing out this years roster as of this meeting. He will email privately those members who still have not paid their dues for the year.
Literary editor, Norma Baird reports we are still in need of at least 1 poetry judge and 2 prose judges. We need to have someone in place for these positions by June. Frank Thomas has volunteered to be a judge in the poetry category. Deadline for the new Driftwood is our next meeting.
Edith Thomas our art editor was happy to announce members have sent her some of the stories they are submitting. It is making things much easier for her when it comes to putting the Driftwood together. This way she can move things around, including any pictures that may go with the writer’s stories. So far there have not been many pictures sent in for inclusion in the book. As a reminder we will be picking the cover for the Driftwood at our first meeting in August. As a reminder the picture should be one that can be wrapped around the cover of the book.
Business manager David Clark says there are plenty of last years books available for the price of $8 for the first book for those having a story in it. After that the price is $10 per book. Back issues at the very low price of $3 each.
Fran announced that she needs help in the months of June and July she will not be here. The duties include supplying the coffee and goodies for the meeting during those months. If you can help out please give Fran a call.
New business – the day for our Wordsorth day has been set. It will be held on May 9th from 1:00 – 4:00 in our meeting room. We will hold our regular meeting that day. Afterwards we will set the room of for the rest of the day. We have received word we will be able to sale any of our published works. A fabulous cooking demonstration of Pampered Chef products will be presented by Jean’s daughter in law. All the food prepared will be served as refreshments to our guests.
Jean has placed a suggestion box on the back table. This is for any suggestions that you might have on ways to improve the group.
As a reminder we have set up a book swap. Members are encouraged to bring any unwanted books and leave them on the back table. Other members can then look these over and pick up any they might find appealing. All books that are leftover will be donated to the library for their book sales.
There is going to be a workshop July 29 – August 1st

Vice President Roberta Womack announced our first reader:
Eileen – who had come across a website called zoetrope.com.. For more information you can go to http://www.zoetrope.com/about.cgi. There they give you a prompt of what they would like you to write a story about. She signed up for this. One of the words she was given was “note.” She came up with a story that she called Dust Catchers. A look at what happened when some passed the main character a note in a bar. Her second story was called Big Boy’s Order. The prompt for this one was how a message can be misleading. A very humorous look at what happened to some men.
Frank was up next with a story he had written called Virgin. A story about his experience hitchhiking from the east coast to the west coast. It had quite an interesting twist.
Angela once again delighted us with a look into her family with a story called Two Ring Circus. It was a story about her sister and the time she had spent with Angela on summer.
Gus had another chapter ready for us from his book. This chapter was called Talking To Dad About Castro. A young boys talk with his father about the Fidel Castro’s dictatorship.
Maurice – read a song that was written by Jimmy Buffett called Trip Around The Sun. Maurice told us of how this song appealed to him.
Our meeting was adjourned at 1130 with an invite for
everyone to join us for lunch at
Respectfully submitted
