Scribblers Brevard
August 22, 2009
Our meeting was called to order by our President Jean at 10:00. There we no visitors present
Minutes from the meeting of August 8th were read and approvoed..
With our treasurer still out of town on business, there was no treasurers report. However, money was withdrawn to pay for the member’s luncehon and a down payment for this years Driftwood to Blue Note Publishing
Old business: It was announced the Driftwood has been submitted to Blue Note. As reviewing the files Blue Note stated they were very impressed with all of the files and how professional it looked already. They are currently picking the colors to enhance the front cover. Nancy is asking that if possible can she get a proof of the front cover as she is curious to see what they did with it.
Business manager: As always there is an ample supply of last years Driftwood
for $5. Previous editions are being sold at $3 a copy. He gave his thanks to
Peggy for helping with the proofreading and to Edith for taking on the job of
art editor/publisher. Both did a fantastic job. Also a big thank you to Norma
for all her hard work in getting the judges and getting our works to them.
Hopefully, we can convince her to stay on for another year!
FYI. Jean read a short article which appeared in a recent edition of the magazine Writer’s Digest. The article was entitled Rejected. It was how one should go about dealing with rejection letters with perseverance. Keep on sending your work out.
New Business: David brought up the idea of doing workshops bi-weekly on grammar, punucation and other ways to help us as writers. The library has the capaiblity that will allow for us to visual presentations on a screen. A powerpoint presentation can be done about a subject with handouts to be given out to members. Everyone agreed this is a great idea.
Since he brought up the idea he was pressed to give a brief more detailed idea about what he had in mind. He went into the correct use of the word their and there When and how it should be used. David also gave a quick look at the roots of our language.
Nancy’s book of Haiku’s is currently with the production department, being proofed for errors. She joked about that since, she lives with a proofreader! The next step after that will be the book being sent to the art department for work on the cover! Hopefully she will have her book in her hands in time for Christmas. She has her fingers crossed.
Toni announced she will be away for awhile as her husband is not doing very well. Our thoughts and prayers go with her during this most difficult time. We will miss her dearly.
Frank still has a few copies of his book Salt In My Socks available.
Nancy Clark announced the first reader.
Maurice Reiff was our first reader. He read a poem entitled Oh For The Treasures Of The Seasoned Mind. He followed the poem with an article from the Florida Writer’s Association called How To Assure A Successful Book Signing written by Leslie Kelly. It had some great hints on how to make a book signing a successful event.
Angella Reilla once again delighted us with a look at her family history with a story called The Show Must Go On And On. About her mother’s singing ability.
Our final reader was Jim Badger who read a poem called Old Gunfighter. He followed this with a short story called Lonesome Rider. He followed with two poems one called High Meadow and Diamondback both of which had been in the Driftwood. His last reading a poem dedicated to the memory of Louis La’Amour called Good-Bye Old Friend.
Meeting was then adjourned at 11:45 with an invitation for anyone who would like over to San Remo’s for lunch.
Respectfully,
Nancy Clark
