Scribbler’s
of Brevard
August 9, 2008
The meeting
was called to order by our President David Clark at 1000.
Before
visitors were announced we were asked to vote on the cover art for this years
Driftwood. We were asked to vote on our favorite picture or art work. Voting
was limited to only three votes. Once the voting was done the top three would
be selected for the final vote for the cover.
We had
several visitors today.
Old
Business: Regarding our meeting of July 12th and the material read.
We as a group should not censure anything that is read. What we come together
for is help with what we have written; to get constructive criticism on it.
There should be no need for any off handed comments while a work is being read.
If someone does not like what is being read, they should get up and leave the
room and come back when 10 minutes have passed. As for going over the allotted
time limit, this is up to the Vice President to rule on. We all have at one
time or another gone over our limit. It was suggested that we practice our reading
before we come for time length.
Scott read
the treasures report we still have $$4,966.71 in our account.
New
business: Walt and Marge spent a tremendous amount of time proofreading our
prose and poetry. They came up with a list of helpful suggestions for issues
they had found and how we could improve on our punctuation.
If you need
help on this you can contact Julie Lee. It was also suggested a purchase of a
style guide for writing would be beneficial.
Jim Badger
is down with a kidney disorder. He is currently at home resting and doing well.
Lou was
back it was wonderful to see him. He was missed at our last meeting.
Janet Bruce
announced that Barbara Hubbard had passed away. She was a past member of our
group.
Voting for
the cover resulted in a colorful painting done by Lori Kendrick being chosen to
adorn the front of this years Driftwood. Thanks to everyone who brought in
something to be judged. We had a fantastic turnout this year!
Roberta
announced our first reader:
Edith said
she had two whimsies to share with us. The first was called Man on the Roof. About accepting love or
help from God no matter how it comes to us. You never know just what form it
will take. Her second whimsy was called A
Love Story. A story about the love of a man and a woman.
How she knew it was here time to go and how she had accepted it and helped him
to understand it.
David, read
to us a story called Deus Absconsicus. It was about Annie Dillard and her essays on
pain and cruelty..
Committee Time was Scott’s reading for the day. An insightful look at serving time on a committee and having the
time to actually do a good job.
Maurice was
our final reader. He read us an email he had received from his granddaughter
and his response to her email. How he tried to get out of her request for him
to start writing his life story.
The meeting
was then adjourned at 1130 with an invitation for everyone to meet for lunch at
Respectfully
submitted,
Nancy Clark
