Scribblers Of Brevard
May 10, 20088
Our meeting was called to order at 10:00 AM, by our fearless leader David Clark. Treasurers reports shows we still remain at $4525 in the bank, with approximately $300 pending deposit and $225 yet to be paid (this is from the members luncheon).
Secretary Nancy Clark apologized that she had forgot to bring the minutes from the previous meeting but would post them, as well as sending to Leila to read at the next meeting.
Lori wanted to mention that she thought Scott Tilley had down an excellent job with this year’s memhership roster. Everyone agreed that is was well done and very easy to read. Thanks from everyone to Scott for updating the roster.
OLD Business: Sally is still at the Tandem (under a new name now), which is across from Wal-Mart on Sarno Road. She should be there until at 12th of May and possibly longer. You can reach her room directly by phone by calling 253-5264. If you want to drop in on her she is in room 503B.
Norma: Driftwood has 55 prose contributions and 58 poetry. She has received responses from two judges so far and is waiting to hear from the last one.
Edith: Has plenty of submissions of artwork and photos for the Driftwood. She
reminded us that at our first meeting in August we would vote on the cover for
the Driftwood.
Gus: Still has copies of the last Driftwood for sale at a price of $5.00
NEW Business: Our president brought up something that he was concerned about regarding Scribbler’s. He mentioned some people have mentioned things like “We didn’t used to do it like this before.” He stated that the club is progressing, growing with time. Just because that was the way it was done in the past, does not mean it has to be done that way now. Also that several of the club’s officers do have full time jobs that at times can call them away, where they are unable to attend meetings. We all need to realize everyone needs to work together to help the club function and to grow. Lori suggested that the Scribbler’s hosting a workshop where in which writer’s who already have books published can share their experience with others. Also brought up was to see how to get the Driftwood set up as an E-book.
Nancy mention that she has seen a copy of Frank Thomas’ book on Melbourne Beach at her local Walgreen’s. Frank said they should be available at all Walgreen’s throughout Brevard County. He also has another book for sale called, Melbourne Beach, The First 25 Years.
Nancy asked if Leila would take minutes while she was away on vacation. Leila graciously agreed as did Roberta when she was told she would need to take over the helm for the President.
Readers for today were announced.
Eileen started us off with a story entitled Semper Fei – Goodbye. The story was from an idea she got from a headline in a newspaper. Her story was about a Marine who committs a murder. Her second story was called ISO – In Search Of. A delightful tale of a young girl who puts an ad in the personals section of a newspaper and how things turn out.
Leila was next with another story on her childhood memories. This one was Horse in the Mirror and Other Memories. A humrous tale of how she, her brother and some other neighborhood childeren bring a horse into the house. It managed to get into her mother’s bedroom before they could get it out.
Marjorie read us story callled Walking Along the Rio Grande. A touching story about a father and son’s walk along the river, moments shared, and their walk home. A run in with a rattlesnake at the end of their walk!
Hal continued reading to a new story he is working on called Maddie. A story that began with a collective bargaining meeting with union officials at a large company. How the bargaining went on late into the night and the results of that meeting.
David adjourned the meeting at 1130 and invited everyone to lunch over at San Remo’s.
Submitted respectfully,
Nancy Clark
