Scribbler’s
of Brevard
July 12,
2008
The meeting
was called to order by our President David Clark at 1000. David announced that
we had one visitor.
She
introduced herself, Tara Gabor. She had learned about us from an article her
mother had found and gave to her.
Scott gave
the treasurer’s report. We currently have $4974.71 and all deposits have been
made.
There was a
reminder from Edith that the first meeting of August would be where we would
decide on the cover for the upcoming Driftwood. Anyone who would like to have
their work considered to bring it in. We will vote on each picture/art work.
The three getting the most votes would be voted on. The one then getting the
most votes by those members present would be the one used for the Driftwood
cover.
New
business: Toni mentioned she had read that there is a new form that needs to be
filled out by club’s which collect dues. She wasn’t sure what it was exactly.
Scott said he has
put it on his to-do list and will look into it.
Carol
brought up an issue with the tree that was planted in memory of deceased member
Pat Daley, better known as the “Tree Lady”. How the first one that was planted
had died and a new one replaced it. There is talk that they are going to be
renovating the area where the tree is currently growing. She said we need to
find out what is going to happen to the tree. Is it going to stay where it is,
is it going to be moved? Jean said she would look into it and report back to
the group.
From the
President’s Grammarian Corner: He had heard someone mention at the previous meeting that they had
got something “For Free” instead of just “Free”. He also noted that there are
quite a few people use a phrase such as “the exact same”. As
opposed to what? This is redundant and should never be put together in a
sentence.
Also
brought was what is a dangling participle. A participle is a verb, followed by words
after it.
We often
say “Hopefully, we will get there on time” which describes “WHEN” we will get
there. What we really mean to say is, “We hope we get there on time”
Roberta
announced our first reader:
Ruth
who delighted us with several of her poems. The first one was called Love Returned. It was about her
grandson. Inner Me was her next
selection, followed by a poem about a friend of her husband which had no title.
It was about the friends passing. A lovely poem about her granddaughter called Miracle of Morgan. Her
next selection was about her 64th birthday called Thoughts on turning 64. She then read
one of her favorite poems she had written Through
Your Eyes. She ended with a cute little poem called Letter to Santa
Scott read
to us from an article he had recently written for a Space Coast Business a local magazine. His article was entitled Blending the Best of Poindexter and Gekko,
Succeeding in Today’s Global Market. It talked a bit about his recent trip
to a conference held by Google.
Maurice was
next who read to us from a poem he had written awhile back. He had updated it.
The title was Oh, Richard My
Bill once
again delighted us all with the next chapter of his new book. This chapter was
called Lesson 1, Don’t
Act Like An Idiot. It was about the main character Orson’s first day at
school and meeting other kids at the bus stop.
Gus was our
last reader and read to us from his autobiography. This chapter was called March of The
Triumphant Rebels. It was about look into the battle of Batista from a child’s
point of view.
The meeting
was then adjourned at 1135 with an invitation for everyone to meet for lunch at
Respectfully
submitted,
